Hey, I thought i would share this, it is one of my favorite fab(rication) "tricks"- I have not seen it illustrated here on RRB, but(t) feel free to point it out
I never named it before but i think i am liking the self sluggin' hybrid butt joint. I t works like a slug for aligning the tubes, and gives "support" to the butt joint as you weld , but the slug is the tip of one of the pieces being joined
in short you are cutting some slits in (or the corners off a square) the end of your tubing, then slipping the "flaps" into the other tube and welding that.
You can do this on round tube as well, just cut 4 slots; at 12, 3, 6, & 9 o'clock
The pix really tell the whole story - do better welding on your bike. but this is plenty for the sign post I made at work... I clamped it to the table and a small piece of angle stock to keep it straight
