I want to lower the gearing on my StingRay.
Going to a bigger chainring will make taking the
chainguard off necassary, which I dont want to do.
Do any of you know of a resource for coaster brake cogs ?
Im assuming its just a generic, Shimano cheepo.
Im exasperated because no combination of words/
Googling will bring up anything other than 9-10sp type
roadie stuff, etc.
It really needs to come down a lot so
Im looking for at least 3 teeth off from stock.

Thanks in advance !

Just to clarify:

Are you looking to increase or decrease the pedaling effort (less effort or more top speed?)?

The reason I'm asking is because gearing terminology can be a little counter-intuative.

Removing teeth from the rear cog will raise your gearing, which is actually a numerically lower ratio. Likewise, adding teeth to the rear cog will lower your gearing, giving you a high numerical ratio.

Put another way,

To lower pedaling effort (less top speed), add teeth to the rear or remove teeth from the front.

To raise pedaling effort (more top speed) remove teeth from the rear or add teeth to the front.

It's all about ratios.

Sheldon Brown (as usual) has good info http://sheldonbrown.com/gears.html

Somebody here may have the gear your looking for. How many teeth?

I am trying to go lower, numerically.
Im trying to get the StingRay at about 70 gear inches
which Im guessing is dropping at least two teeth from the
rear sprocket.....from 18 to 16.
So...Harder to pedal, more top speed. .....

Thank you, multipass.....

I'd try the local shops first for a cog. Usually the shops that have low cost kids bikes will stock that sort of thing.

Failing that, I may have a 16t in my pile o' parts - I'll check later tonight.
