I bought a bike off here From John C about a month ago and finally started to put it together. decided to take some paint thinner and see what the original paint looked like under the house paint and I was SHOCKED  what I found. What I found was a very nice dark Blue paint with white darts, and Pinstripes on the fenders and even an original decal on the front fender. IT is amazing what some people will paint over with a crappy paint Job. Here are some pics of what Ive done so far.

IF YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS BIKE PLEASE FILL ME IN ALL I KNOW IS THAT IT IS A COLUMBIA WITH A HANGING TANK BELIEVE IT IS A 37-38. Thanks, Nate

Re: Shocked what I found under some house paint

I remember painting some bikes as a kid, and it wasn't because they "needed" painting, it was because we were tired of the same-ol-same-ol, and it was cheaper to buy a can of spray paint than to buy a new bicycle.

Re: Shocked what I found under some house paint

i remember the first bike i painted.

a friend and i found a gallon of black tire paint in his fathers garage.
we were 10 at the time.
found a couple brushes and painted it on the road in front of my home (lived on a dead end street)
when finished, there was 3/4 of a gallon of tire paint on the road and the other 1/4 gallon painted the entire bike black.
that bike never dried, and i'm pretty sure my butt was sore for a week (got the belt across my bare butt for that one.)

great work on the bike, it looks friggin awesome!

Re: Shocked what I found under some house paint

I found that you can spray them with oven cleaner and it wont touch the original paint , but will remove house paint really easy. The frame to me ( I might be wrong ) looks like the 39 to 41 year Columbia made the repop after. I bought one of the repop tanks and it looks just like that one , and it only fits those years. Yours is the original. Its just called a tank. The hanging tank refers to something like an Elgin that didn't have a bottom bar and the tank just hangs under the top bar.

Re: Shocked what I found under some house paint

I found this ad at Davenet and it is listed as a 37-38 catalog but when I copied the pic it said 41 catalog.

Re: Shocked what I found under some house paint

I was first in line for this one when JohnC got it. I am so glad that finances forced me to pass on it! I would have just gone at it with a wire wheel and destroyed what I couldn't see. Great save! Can't wait to see the finished product.

Yeah I work outside so it's not so bad. Got to wear gloves too or it dries out your hands.

Re: Shocked what I found under some house paint

that's so cool. did you have to work hard to get that paint off? I just got this and there is blue paint under the rack. thought i'd see if I can find out what's under this ugly green paint. I have some paint thinner, should I just rub it on with a cloth?

Re: Shocked what I found under some house paint

Don't think that's a Columbia, just because of the decal paint. But looks like a Westfield made bike. Think it's late 30's.

It takes alot of time but it is worth it in the end. What I did was take some 0000 steel wool and paint thinner and went to town. Then when I started to see the Original paint I cleaned it off with a rag. Good Luck hope you find a gem under that green paint. :D

Wow you're right that green is hideous, looks like something from the emerald city of ozz. Now find the wizard's spray gun and paint it....lol
