That's right...I'm early this month! But, it's an easy tip, so that makes it a fair trade.
For those who might deal with a plentiful pile of wheels sporting mixed dimensions, here's a quick and easy way to identify rim sizes without struggle. I usually can't separate the close ones just by looking.
Step 1: Go to the home center.
Step 2: Buy a genuine wooden yardstick for about $1.00. (They're often kept in the paint section.)
Step 3: Drill a 3/8" hole near one end of the stick--placement isn't critical. (10mm is a better fit, but an uncommon size.)
Step 4: Place the axle for wheels of known size into the hole and mark with a Sharpie where the rim crosses the yardstick.
That's it! The method is astonishingly accurate at sorting naked 27" from 700C from 650B from all the various 26" flavors. Our bike co-op uses a version of this to identify wheels that patrons bring in for service, repair, or replacement. Most of the time, they are completely oblivious to the various sizes. This handy tool makes short work of the identification process.
