Shouldn't there be a law about the use of the word "vintage"

That would be from the 1997 Next brand Walmart $59 closeout special "bike vintage". Bad year, it goes down rough and only sours with age. Now a good 1866 Brooks or a 2011 Brooks will only get sweeter with age.

Classic (1970-on, at least 25 years old), Vintage (1948-1969) and Antique (1923-1945)

fron here

maybe we should use this

I don't mind that "scale."

When I was growing up my parents told me any item of worth over 30 years old could be considered an antique, and I've kinda held to that. I like the classic and vintage lables, but I think antique can overlap those. Also, if it just goes to 1923, then something before that is just Old Crap?

Historic? relic?

Actually the definition of "vintage" is: "The year or place in which wine, esp. wine of high quality, was produced." So, when you apply it to any other thing, made in any year, it qualifies as vintage. Antique on the other hand has a distinct age which varies according to who you are talking to. I consider antique to be at least 35 years old, but that's just me. I agree the word vintage is way over used & abused, but is also correct for any age item. Just my .02 worth.

So let's all rush out & buy some "vintage" walmart bikes before they become extinct!!! Or how about a vintage 2012 Corvette? Just don't sound right, but it sells! :lol: :shock: :lol: :shock:

when i hear vintage first thought comes to mind its the bicycles with the gumwall 26- 1-3/8s or 3/4s

I thought vintage meant ripped, discolored, broken, dented......I didn't think age mattered.
That is what I thought.. and "vintaged" is something just aged right? I like the term classic or historic.. like the plates on a car of 25 years and older..

Next year, 1986 Dodge Shadows and Ford Taurus' will be eligible for the historic/classic plates. A Shadow did sell at Barrett-Jackson last time for $8,000. :mrgreen:

Ok, I'm just trying to make people feel old, LOL.I do agree, it is over used.

woohoo. That means my Samurai also falls into that category.

The scale posted above is pretty much what I tend to go by.

I'm sorry,but a taurus with a historic plate just seems wrong.

Yeah, there is a big difference between what is and is not vintage in my book.
'81 Camaro = vintage, '82 = not so much.
1978 T/A with 455, OH YEAH! 1987 T/A.....no
1978 Mustang...... Yes 1987 mustang..... NO

I think of vintage as 1970's and back with exceptions made for ones that still retained the 70's body style.

As far as bikes:
2010's = new
2000's = part bikes and flip for profit bikes
1990's = BMX bikes....old school / most others Walmart junk
1980's = cheap vintage
1970's = expensive vintage
1960's = antique
1950's and back = classic
1937 Elgin Bluebird = HOLY GRAIL :mrgreen:

Definition of VINTAGE
1 a (1): a season's yield of grapes or wine from a vineyard (2): wine; especially: a usually superior wine all or most of which comes from a single year b: a collection of contemporaneous and similar persons or things : crop
2 : the act or time of harvesting grapes or making wine

so to me vintage in bicycle terms should mean best quality not a specific time

i suggest we go by years of existence
for example
25 to 50 years old should be classic
51 years or older antique

now if you think a sting ray is best quality bike out there then you can say a "1965 classic vintage sting ray"
now i think rollfast and monark are better than schwinn so i would say "1946 antique vintage monark" "1949 antique schwinn" "1939 antique vintage pre war rollfast" can't forget about pre war that gives it that expensive sound.

now there is the "1933 antique vintage historic schwinn autocycle" i think you all know why historic.
