So, just getting back into the bike scene since my childhood days (where I put no telling how many hundreds of miles on a Schwinn Predator), I picked up a cheap Target Schwinn (...flame suit on...) to make sure I would actually use it enough to justify buying better stuff. So far, so good. However, having been in the custom car scene for years, I can't leave anything stock. The bike is flat black with a red houndstooth screen printing in several places. I want that tackiness gone and to be left with the base flat black. Any advice on how to tackle that? I've thought about trying acetone, steel wool, or even super fine sandpaper. Any input would be appreciated.

So, fwiw, acetone does a nice job. You just have to take precaution not to let it set too long. It does tend to soften the basecoat.
