FWIW. i had an old indian bicycle w/the thicker 1/2" pitch chain. pretty burly!

My 39 Columbia Superb is 1/2" pitch x 3/16. I also have a Columbia catalog from the same period that shows the 1/2 chains as standard. Westfield may have used the 1/2 for the Columbia line and also for deluxe Westfield bikes. It was a little more money, usually put on the more deluxe bikes by all of the makers and often referred to as a "Speed Chain."
And don't even get Phil started on the CWC bikes...you think he knows chains...
