Ok to design a frame you draw some weird bike on paper , and then try to translate that to bent pieces of pipe . Then you try to figure at what angles the curve ought to be welded to the neck where it will be just like the tire. As you can see on the black and white bike I built ,this dosent always work. Sometimes your pretty far into a build and notice that something dosent line up with something else. It's metal so you can change it but its a pain to cut something off and change. Then you run the risk of it not being straight when you put it back together.
I took some large brown paper and held it up to this orange bike I just finished and traced the outline. Then I cut it out and transfered it to my jig table. You could use plywood if you dont have a table. The orange bike is really right as far as reaching the bars , seat height and length to bb. Now all I have to do is stay within the lines of that bike and I can dream up any silly design I want ...and it will be rideable....and comfortable. For looks your on your own.
So everything is ready and I have tubing and plenty of wire for my welder....so here goes...more later

Sounds like the way to do it. Using comfort and rideability as building parameters........GOOD LUCK.

i haven't given much thought to how i do it, but i've never built a bike that doesn't fit me perfectly (comfortable and easy to ride)

usually i sit my seat on milk crates (one for lowriders, 2 crates stacked for standard bikes)
i grab a set of bars, sit on the seat and visualize the rest.

hasn't let me down yet.
