Steam engine

Recently I was thinking about adding a gas engine to my bike but in the interested of being different, or perhaps just difficult, I have started to consider building a steam engine. I've seen this on a few bikes before but usually they're huge or aesthetically unpleasing. I don't think it would need to be as big as the ones I've seen just to go 50 or 60km/h. does anyone have any background in this subject or has anyone tackled a project like this before?

I had a similar idea until I realized that I would be putting a backyard engineered steam engine between my legs.

It's not so much the engine as the requisite boiler that brings with it the problems of compressing steam locomotion into a bicycle sized package and the concerns of locating a high pressure vessel near the parts you care the most about.

Graylock- your link reminded of that guy (Paul Brodie) who rebuilt that steam bike. His website is very cool. He has recreated some cool early motorcycles including Excellsior. Paul Brodie used to build great Mountain Bikes back in the mid 80's.

A steam engine doesn't really have to run on steam. They sometimes move steam locomotives around in the yard using compressed air without having to fire up the boilers.

Compressed air is.............compressed :shock: ...........but there are compressed air motors out there, even turbines.

A steam engine is just another word for BOMB. It might sound good on paper until you research what can happen.

Otherwise, if you can pull it off, it might make an awesome "Steampunk".
