Not sure what 16ga translates to, but its what I build all of my frames with.
I think they call it .065 too.
Checking the tubing chart. 1/16th is the same as 16 ga and .0625 so if you use it
then it will be plenty strong for a bike frame.

Cool because that means I don't need to buy tubing for my top tubes on my RRBBO8 bike.

If your frame is thin, you could use a little thicker tubing to strengthen it up.
If its already 16ga then there is no problem using the same thickness.
I cut up that Schwinn and a Worksman and they were both 16ga tubing. I chopped
a Walmart Kent and it was super thin. I could have cut that tubing with a pocket knife.

.065 wall mild steel tubing is great for frames. Like Uncle Stretch says if the frame is really thin then this is more likely where you'll have a problem. Weld in gussets to the stressed areas and you will be fine.

I use 16 guage on most of my builds where I can get it, thicker if I cant.
If you are welding to something thinner, it might be good to use the slightly thicker material to help draw some of the weld heat away so you don't burn through the thin stuff. Depends on what welder you are using, and how good a welder you are...

Luke.
