Had a couple of 5-spd Fastbacks go through my hands some years ago that had those bars, but I don't know exactly what year. :|

I've actually got the same question...

I was told at one point that is there's three types of StingRay handlebars:

Pre-1970, Post 1970, and Fastback.

I want a set that are like the ones on the bike you posted; but more of a "U" shape (Post-1970) when seen from the seat, the trouble is, I don't have a definitive idea of what to look for.

Peatbog, can you post a rider's eye-view of the bike?

It's hard to show a 2D picture of something that needs to be seen in 3D. I hope this helps.

Anyway, I was hoping someone made reproductions of these. I don't want to pay vintage Schwinn prices. I just want them for some bikes I am building.

Thanks!!! It helped a lot more than you may think, but I will say this:

It's a good thing the bike is in my living room and I can literally "drive" up to my computer. 8)

SCHWINNRAY69; I can never get tired of seeing pics of that bike. Great build. 8)

Hear that? It's the sound of the plot thickening....

I was perusing this page:

...and I saw this (in reference to the first picture shown)
The best of the Krate handlebars...

What the heck does that refer to?

...and can anybody take a front-shot of these bikes? :p

There are more styles than just three. The bars in the pic on the coppertone Ray look like they *might* be Schwinn bars. Did you slide the bars out of the neck and look for the Schwinn stamp? If those are Schwinn bars, they came off of a '67 bike. That's the year they had that style. Gary

What's the other styles? Is it too many to list?

The ones I'm looking for is the ones that had more of a "U" shape like this:
green3sprays.jpg
(That's a '70)

...but the handles/ grips swept rearward more than they do on my '75,like this:

(That's a '68 BTW)

I'm assuming you're referring to Peatbog here, since the Coppertone is his. In case you were asking me,I've never had the bars out of mine, but judging by the condition of the rest of it when I got it, they're original Schwinn

Yeah 66 and 67 Fastbacks used those bars as well. The 66 Fastback was the first to use a lot of special parts on a 20" bike- the 5-speed stik shift, the overload tube, the red-dot brake levers more commonly associated with the Krates, the 5-speed rear hub, the 5-speed Krate type chainguard, among other things.

The 5-speed derailleur and large front sprocket were Sprint parts, however, not the "Schwinn Approved" stuff made later (68-up) for the Krates and 5-speed Stingrays.

The regular 66 Stingray didn't use the bent down bars, but the Fastback did. The '67 Stingray used those bars, then both bikes went to the tall wide bars along with the Krates in 68. In 70, the bars remained tall but the uprights were bent to a more parallel angle.

Have fun with it! Coppertone is always a great looking color on these bikes, I think.
