Im laying out my first stretched out cruiser im about to start building. Id like to have gears but if i dont not to worried. One of the questions i have is about the chain. If i keep it a single gear do i need any type of guide? from the crank to the back is going to be roughly 3-3 1/2 foot. If i go with gears is there anything i need to look out for?

on my single speed i just have a strait chain. i just make sure to pull the wheel back to keep the chain pretty tight. my geared stretches are derailleured gears and i have idlers on them. one has it just too keep the chain from looking so saggy, the other also needs it to clear the frame in all the gears.

If you are set up with a long single speed chain line and a chain guard, you may experience chain slap against the inside of the chain guard from any lateral movement. On my stretch the distance from the center of the rear axle to the center of the crank is 40" and my chain does this.I have been looking at some aftermarket roller chain tensionors that I might be able to conceal behind the chain guard.
