cool find, and it was bought the day before my second birthday. I used the Inflation Calculator to see how much it would cost in todays money. Heres what came out

What cost $250.79 in 1977 would cost $877.65 in 2009

Interesting how a parallel-spec bike new, today, would cost $3,000..... How did that happen???

Not to take away from your score there Hooch, that was a HUGE score IMHO. You can see the chrome one I just posted over in "Other Bikes".

of course there is nothing even approximating a 'parallel-spec' bike these days.....i assume you're keying in on the 600 derailleur and equating that with a modern ultegra equipped road bike, but honestly, if the chinese wanted to clone that bike with that level of technology in mass merchant quantities it could probably retail for 99 bucks....

doesn't mean i don't like the old schwinn style though. :D

the $99 chinese bike wouldnt last like this one has :)
the previous owner rode it on the full Ragbrai route in 77 and on one or 2 stages of it every year since.
he also commuted with it regularly to work he figured he put atleast 1000 miles a year on it.
he replaced the rear wheel last year due to it breaking spokes weekly it was tuned up every year and received a new chain every 2 years. when he layed it in the back of my truck into the snow he was bummed as it was the first time it touched snow, while it has what he estimated to be 34,000 miles on it its it pretty darned good shape and shifts so smooth

That's awesome!
A bike's back-story is always cool to hear.

I dont understand why he sold it really but I told him if he had remorse in a few months to get ahold of me and we could work out a deal for it to go home
