Finally got my surfin' saddle bag bike rack done.
Why can't I just be happy with an off-the-shelf bike rack!? Guess that be too EZ.
Anyhoo, the surfboard is outta 3/4" maple and walnut. A fella on the bey makes wood cutting boards with decorative striping, so i had him make me a 24" long X 5.25" wide board and then i shaped it into the surfboard and added a fin. I built a cleat under the front of the borad outta oak that fits into the cradle area above the rear strutts. Once in the cradle a piece of plywood is placed under the cradle and sandwiches the cleat, secured by a "T nut" The struts are 1/2" aluminum from Home Depot I cut to length, squished the ends and drilled to fit. Finished them in the same color as all the other hardware on the bike. Had to drill out the center hole on the board to clear the seatpost spike. I used 'T' nuts on the wood to allow the eight 1\4-20 bolts to hold the leather saddle bags. I finished the wood in a hand-rubbed watco danish oil/polyuerethane blend.
Of course now it's too dern cold to even take the bike out!!!!!!!! :x
