As to the idea, I've found that many of the small universal joints have way too much play in them, so if you do that, buy a more expensive, beefier U-joint. Don't just use one made for a socket set, because that won't work. I've tried.

I have used these in the past for dune buggy projects, coupler, plus stub shafts that fit them. Hope it helps
