That whole seat belt law is one reason I miss my old International truck. I got pulled over weekly in it for not wearing a seat belt but I simply told the officer that I am maintaining the originality of the vehicle and it was NOT originally equipped with seat belts. Nothing they can do about it. And amazingly through hitting 5 deer, getting rear ended by a Honda Civic, side swiped by a Pontiac, and head on by a Neon, I never got hurt and DROVE the truck home after all of them (Can't say the same for the new crap that hit it). One deer did take out a headlight but that was the extent of any damage.

When I was in 5th grade my 7th grade cousin and I took our .22 rifles out to the RR tracks a mile west of our houses to shoot. Did some shooting and got bored. Climbed up into an open boxcar on a freight train that was on a siding for a sit. All of a sudden the train jerked and started moving. Before long it was moving too fast to jump off. It stopped a while later in a town about 30 mi. north of home. We jumped off the train and ended up at the grocery store looking for a phone to call home. We were carrying our .22's in town and no one said a word to us. This was around 1965. Called my dad and he thought we were pulling a joke. Got in a little trouble but not too bad. My dad was more mad at my cousin because he was older and should have known better. Never messed around trains after that. Gary

I am 40 years old now so I was one of the last genrations to live a free childhood. I was a pretty good kid too, never got into trouble. But man, I feel bad for my kids. They will never know the feeling of grabbing their bikes and just leaving in the morning. Whether riding to school or just taking off in the summer for the day. It's why my kids don't have a passion for thier bikes like my brother and I did...they don't do the same thing for them. It was our ticket to see the world, to go explore and live those long long summers.

In 6th or 7th grade when I had my Supergoose, not only did we not wear helmets or pads, I didn't even have brakes on it. But seriouisly, it didn't.

Ok, ok, you wan't another example? Last summer I was outside working and the kids were playing in the yard. One of them complained about being thirsty and how we were "out of water". I told them to grab the hose and have a drink. They truly had no idea what I was talking about. I had to show them how to drink from a garden hose. Of course my oldest was skeptical and didn't think this behavior was safe. Remember the good old days when we drank water because we were thirsty, NOT because we needed to "Stay Hydrated"
I think we are the last generation that had a free childhood.

41 goin' on 22 here...

I've been MIA for a week or so; and this thread - and this post - made my day. 8)

"Be careful;and be home before the street lights are on."

"All the way on?"

(Mom gives me that look)

"Okay".....

I don't miss it..... much; but man, I'm glad I grew up when I did.... 8)
