Tire size for 26x1 rim?

I'm sorry for asking what is probably a couple very basic questions but I've done some research and still am having trouble. I have a set of Mavic 26x1 XM117 wheels with a Nexus 8sp hub and rollerbreak (and shifter,brake lever). The rims have Kenda Kwest 26x1.5 tires on them. I would like to swap this wheel set with the 24" Nexus 3sp/coaster brake and 26" front that is on my Electra RatRod. The Kenda 1.5's look a little thin and I would like more of a "balloon" type. My two questions at the moment; Is there a wider, more cruiser like tire to fit the Mavics and will this swap work?

As for fitting 24x 3's in a particular frame, that may be tough. If the bike did not have a Balloon size(2.125) tire in originally, A 24x3 probably won't fit. More here viewtopic.php?t=925

Thanks for the reply Clancy! Funny, I read that article before I asked and was still left wondering. I'm not worried about fitting the 24"x3's on anything, those are coming off. I'm just wanting to put those Mavics with the 8sp on my bike. What would be a good balloon size tire for the 26x1 rims?

2.125" tires fit 1" MTB type rims with no problem. Pretty much "standard" currently.
