Cleaning off a 53 phantom and the frame has nice paint but rust all around. My question is, even though it's fine without doing this, is it a good idea to spray on a clear coat or will this kill the value of the bike? Just don't like the rough feeling.

I think it looks awesome, so rich but not hiding the fact that the paint's gone in some spots.
