Hey guys, I am going to start a new custom build soon and I want to explore options for a new, yet vintage-looking, transmission. I don't know if I'll keep the original single-speed chainring or upgrade it to a two-speed or three speed. More importantly, I want to look at hubs. I am wanting something faster, more efficient, and more modern than the tired old Sturmey-Archer and Shimano hubs from the 70s.


I am also going to use a vintage stick-shifter, so is it possible that I can modify an old 3 or 5 speed shifter from a muscle bike to work with a hub that has 5 or more speeds? I'm guessing I will need a custom made cable?

Even better, is there anything that comes already laced? I am likely going to spring for a new set of wheels as well. I'd prefer something that it easy to clean, say aluminum? I may also paint them black, but I'm decided.

Finally, who do you recommend for disc brakes? I have seen them on the front of bikes, but not on the rear.

The bike that will be the base for this job is a 1966 Huffy men's cruiser.

For rear hubs, Sturmey Archer makes a bunch of modern trike specific hubs in single, 2, 3, and 5 speeds. They come with/for a variety of brake options too, coaster, band, freewheel.

I believe the vintage S/A shifters will work on these hubs, I could be wrong though.

When the build off is going on traffic on the regular boards usually goes way down. Therefore it may take some time to get much discussion going.

So that's why my parts haven't moved, lol. Usually there isn't much left outback when I post a for sale thread! :crazy2::43:

By the way, how is that '84 Marquis holding up?
 
Keep in mind, the SA 8 speed is direct-drive in low gear, with 7 upward shifts, so you gotta run a TINY primary ratio on a 26" wheel, or else the gearing will be mad high. Also, retrofitting a vintage stick shifter will be hard, unless you go for the gripshifter and work off of that....

May I humbly suggest the Nuvinci n360 CVT hub? It comes grip-shift only, with 2 cables, but typically, making a DIY stick shift out of a grip shifter is pretty straightforward. I think having a single ring up front and a continuously variable rear hub would give you plenty of range, and it'd be trick. The Nuvinci comes in freewheel, roller-brake compatible, and disc brake versions, in silver or black.

This should work with a vintage stickshifter, so long as you find a Sturmey 3 speed version. (Shimano 3 speeds have different cable pull ratios.
 
The stick shifter is essential to this build. I suppose I should let this super-bird-of-a-build out the cage when I get back home.

Will other sticker suiters such as those off a Schwinn Stingray or Krate work?
 
Hey partsguy, why is the stick shifter essential? Just wondering out loud. Is it lighter or smoother or easier to operate?
