Hey thanks Kim, my Ebike project got put on the back burner last year and I've not thought much about it till right now. Yeah I've done my research on all the battery technologies that have come to market recently, the cost of new tech was the main reason I shelved it. I wanted a small compact high Ah rated pack that would push a 72V setup. At first I was going to build a hub motor'd 24x3 rim with just a single speed crank and freewheel setup but now I'm leaning more towards the brushless RC motor idea. Have you ever studied the two and three speed automatic gear setups on 1/8th scale RC cars? I've been thinking of somehow building an automatic belt driven CVT for these little motors. It might be way out there but I think it could work? Maybe?

I must have missed the part about you being a Paraplegic, wow! About 10 years ago I had a really bad accident. I fell 30ft to a hardwood floor and broke my left foot in 3 places and shattered my right tibia for 7 inches above my ankle. I was in a wheelchair for over a year and right after the surgery my Dr said I have a 30% chance of a full recovery. Basically telling me I had a 70% chance of being in the wheelchair the rest of my life or loosing both my feet and my right leg at the knee. I guess I'm just saying I feel you man.

Right now with all the things I've got going on I'm a member of about 9 different forums and I rarely have time to visit all of them on a regular basis but I will most likely join up with you guys on the Ebike site. I'm a professional fabricator and custom motorcycle builder by trade for the last 14 years. I've owned my own custom shop for 12 of those years. I have a degree in Industrial Design and a minor in Mechanical Engineering but I have only a limited understanding of Electronics other than my experience with RC boats and planes over the years. What I do know is somewhat self taught and I most likely will never be a master of it.

Do you guys have a source for the belts and pulleys or are they being made just for you? My guy in CO said the limiting factor for adapting his system to a stretch cruiser is the length of belts available. But come on, the auto or aerospace industry are bound to have hundreds of different sized toothed belts available, don't you think? I should do a Thomas Registry search when I have the time. I'm actually thinking of building a fat tire electric boardtrack racer with no pedals or cranks, so I guess it would fall under a E-scooter or even an E-motorcycle, but what the heck? I think it will be plenty fast and fun and if I've got to register it, oh well. I'd like to see it go 50Mph and a range of 25-30 miles or more.

I'm still a motorcycle guy at heart and I love loud fast crazy powerful bikes that guzzle fuel like its out of style. I have 14 in my collection so far. I'm a collector of fine krap. I'll never be what my brother in law would call PC or "Green" (he drives a Merc diesel on spent fryer oil from his resturaunt.) I just don't care that much about saving the world one tank of gas at a time when China is 3 times as many peeps as us and polluting 50 time faster than we do, what's the point? We're only here a short time, you should have fun while you can.

The world was here before we were and it will be here after we're all gone. Funny how everyone's so worried about plastic in landfills and all the oil based chemicals. Please someone tell me where does oil come from? Anyone? Yeah I understand about things getting into drinking water and all that but all kinds of water purification technologies have been perfected over that last 30 years and most municipalities already treat drinking water to some extent before it ever comes out of your tap. Your already paying for it, unless you live in Africa and get it from a well with a bucket. There is a guy here in the US that has a product that pulls the moisture from the air and makes gallons of pure clean drinking water per day. The output depends on the relative humidity where you live but it really works.

OK I'm done ranting. Talk soon Travis

I have a close friend whose family is from Western Oz near Perth. I surfed Margaret River back in 1995 when I was in Oz for a few months. I like it out there a lot.

OK well since the crank and pedals are just hanging out there for aesthetics go with the second option. Your never going to use them anyway unless buy some miracle your legs start working again. I don't see why their even necessary, I mean if a cop stopped you and you could prove you were chair bound why would the cranks even be required? I mean your building a vehicle to help facilitate your mobility and overcome your handicap. I think you qualify for an exemption...

I usually use 7/8"x.120" wall DOM and have used 1"x.095" wall DOM in the past with good success. So I guess that would be 2.4mm wall on the 1" and 3.0mm wall on the 7/8". I think if you went with a larger diameter tube, say the equivalent to 1.25" you could go to a .083" or even a .065" wall. That would be 2.1mm and 1.6mm respectively. Now if you use 4130 alloy steel you could use thinner wall but I hope you have a TIG and a way to heat treat afterword.

Now I want to know how you get 7000 Watts out of that little motor? What batteries and speed controller are you running? That's 9.39HP! That's a little excessive! Not really, I have a street legal 1975 Yamaha RD350 two stroke twin making over 87HP, now that"s excessive. Its a blast!

I would only suggest a shoulder bolt and a bronze bushing. Might have to step up your tube dia. to allow the bushing to fit but no worries mate she'll be right! LOL.

I watched the vids on those drive units. Crazy fast and crazy torque. How long do the batteries last?
