My son (the one on the right) is attending UC Davis. A bike friendly campus. He’s riding his Walmart cruiser. It’s slow, too much physical work to ride around, and it’s not holding up mechanically.

So you would think that his bike customizer dad would build him something wildly spectacular. No. Bike thieves are too prevalent. So I had requirements /goals.

- Fast / effiecient.
- Comfortable
- Reliable
- Stealhy (thieves won’t look twice at it)

I reached out to my friend Dave (@Pondo ) as I started my search. We talked about what I should look for. I thought a Hybrid would fit the bill. Turns out he had one. It had been given to him from his dad, so he was going to pay it forward by donating it to my son. Over the last week we’ve been discussing individual parts, what we think will be best for my kid at college, and he’s been piecing it together.

Dave will be on his way south for another bike on Saturday, so he’s even delivering it. When he does, the project will begin.

All this talk of bikes getting stolen at college... too real. I gave my son a Murray BeachComber cruiser to use at college and it got stolen. Then his buddy saw it parked in front of an academic building and called him. The buddy waited around for backup and my son ran over and stole it back. :21: I ended up building it up for RRBBO 18.

Do what the amateurs do here in NZ spray paint the whole bike stolen black make sure to have paint drips on the frame, I don't think a thief will steal a bike that looks like it's already been stolen
