This is an "Anything Goes" bicycle build off
Two rules. First picture posted March 1st or later captioned "I'm in."
Right here in this forum.
and on March 31st or before, final picture captioned "I'm done."

A voting thread with finished pics will be compiled afterwards.
Posting progress pictures along the way is encouraged, we'll all be in one thread together.
A trophy titled "Rat Supreme" will be awarded to the winner of the most votes garnered in a 1 week period.

Carl.

The unofficial shootout will be using the Central Standard Time zone for the beginning and end...

Are you going to have "unofficial shootout" again this year? If so I'm in. It's now a tradition, even if you only organize it every 50 years.

We'll see if we can get a half a dozen or more folks interested. Maybe I'll fire up another "Shootout"

Carl.

I'm vaguely interested in signing up for something I need to back out of a few weeks later. We'll see if I could get the parts together to disappoint you all with the RockRat...

Well that'd be 3 of us so far. 31 day unlimited - build, rebuild or unbox, there's not much in the way of rules. Post a picture on or after March 1st captioned "I'm in" and post another on or before March 31st saying "I'm done" We'll all be in one thread, posting updates till we're done.

I don't even have an idea what to build though. I've got my "Big Build Off Bike" hanging in the rafters, but nothing just waiting for some attention...

Carl.

You must have something that needs upgrading, attention, new wheels or tires, remember no rules everything goes.

Haha everything I have is pristine! (Oh I'm sorry Lord knows I'm just jokin'...)

Might be time to build a tall bike...

Well I had a Schwinn twin bar stashed for the Big Buildoff but I just traded it for a few parts and this funky repop Columbia. Looks like I have a shoot out bike...

700's hmm, but that lipstick red has got to go! 3 piece crank feels like it's full of sawdust and such a small chainring... Looks like I'm building a boardtracker (we run what we brung) or...

Or I build my Scrambler.. I so badly want a side hack to put a cooler on. I've got a few other ideas with junk I have. Like the trike rear end I want to severely narrow... Or a tall bike, not crazy tall just kinda tall, something I can mount from the ground, or a small tall (I'm looking for a chrome 12" wheel frame to put my 20" chrome Y frame on top of...) I've no Big Buildoff Bike now either and when does that start this year?

It isn't March 1st yet .

Nope. We haven't had six folks interested yet either. I'm not even sure what bike to build. Here's the best part brother, basically no rules... One photo captioned "I'm in", keep a common build thread going that we'll all be using and a photo captioned "I'm done". So finish your unfinished bike or rebuild an existing bike or build a new one, it doesn't matter. We could call this buildoff the Great Tax Evasion, start it earlier and end on April 15th but I'm not starting a BO until we have at least six people interested.
So are you interested in building a bike? You'd make it five so far.

Cool. We've got the bare minimum to have an interesting build off, and we've got our basic rules

and on March 31st or before, final picture captioned "I'm done."

Posting progress pictures along the way is encouraged, we'll all be in one thread together. (I'll start a new one for 2020) A voting thread with finished pics will be compiled afterwards. A trophy titled "Rat Supreme" will be awarded to the winner of the most votes garnered in a 1 week period.

The unofficial shootout will be using the Central Standard Time zone for the beginning and end...

I'd love to have a few more entrants. How many active members do you think we have on ratrodbikes.com?

This comes up as a "2019 update 2020" post under build challenges. Maybe people aren't noticing the 2020 part. Perhaps a post in "bike talk" about this would alert more people. I'm looking forward to this. I'm thinking of buying a Wal-a-part Kent Thruster for $99 and using the frame, seat post, brakes, brake levers and wheels to make a single speed gravel bike to race 100K gravel event the first week of June and a 50 mile cross country race in early August. Then I would throw out the frame and keep the wheels and replace the rear hub using my junk stash Bayless Wycliff 114 mm spaced flip flop hub for another bike that has wood wheels and the alloy rims would make that a better rider. Someone posted that the thruster rear spacing is 114 mm. If I get the Thruster I would grind off the paint as I can't paint in the cold but I could make it raw. I would remove the plastic chain guard and replace the fork, seat, chain, tires, gooseneck, cog, chainring, crank, pedals and bars with stuff from my stash. I have an old Breezer dropper post attachment with the external close pin spring that I could use. I might keep the original fork on the bike if 45 mm tires fit? It comes with 700c x 40 mm tires. It has a three piece square taper steel crank. This bike is not always available and it sometimes goes on sale. I have seen it for $68, but it might suddenly become unavailable so I'll probably order it next week. The fixie and single speed hipster folks hate the Thruster, which is reason enough to use it as the basis for a build. Older ones had a flip flop hub but now it just has a single speed BMX cog. It's hard to find specs as they aren't listed on the Wall-mart site but info on the net says it has a 20 inch frame and track style rear slide ins for the rear wheel. It comes in two variants, with linear pull brakes or with side pull brakes. I want the blue one with black tires and linear pull brakes. The plan is to beat it up and throw it away.
