here's the intro of the corvette in 54..
IntroductionofSchwinnCorvette-1954s.jpg

When you consider Chevy introduced the Corvette in 1953, Schwinn took quite a gamble by introducing their homage to it in 1954. What if the car would been flop? Think of the hit they would have taken and how valuable they would be today? It's a shame they never made the 'Schwinn Edsel' or the Schwinn Corvair'

Oh sure - like the "Schwinn Chevette", or "Schwinn Vega"?

perhaps it's just my quirky interest in history but, I thought they were both named after the sailing ships classified as Corvettes....

Corvette (Sloop of War)
The Corvette was typically "Brig Rigged" with only two masts. It is sometime called a "Sloop of War" but should not be confused with an actual sloop.
Corvettes had their guns arranged on a single fighting deck. A typical corvette would carry between 12 to 20 guns ranging between 6 to 12 pounders.
As the ships become less well armored its abiltiy to manuever increases.
So this would make the Corvette a fast light ship that could attack quickly but not bring an enormous amount of fire power to hand.
