All you have to do is ask yourself how a bicycle can be build, assembled and shipped half way around the world and still sold for so little even after the stores mark up. The money you saved came from cutting corners, machine assembled parts, etc. This leaves greasing, truing and final adjustments to the new owner. Do all that and it'll probably be a decent bike as long as it isn't abused.
 
I was in the checkout lane at Walmart the other day and what looked like a dad and his son were purchasing a 24" MTB look-a-like. The boy seemed proud of his new bike and was bragging to another customer how he was going riding on it as soon as he got it home. I didn't have the heart to tell his dad he was buying a girls bike for his son.
 
I was actually filling out a "online" job application for a part time bike assembler at the local Toys R Us store, and was reading the fine print as to specifics of the job, they give you 20 minutes to assemble the bike..not really enough time in my mind to go through and make it road worthy..so I passed on the job..
