I ran into this problem in the home strech for RRBO5. I thought maybe it was just the bicycle I was using had a longer frame, but its interesting that others have had this problem too.

Wal-mart is not a bike shop. I'm pretty sure they've got Bell wrapped around there finger though. This is how I tend to think of it.

Wal-mart - " :x If you don't get your prices down Bell we are gonna drop you on your rears and no one will buy your cheap junk. :x "
Bell - (shivering in their boots) " :!: Whatever you say Wal-mart, we will get our costs down immediately :!:  "

back at Bell headquarters -
Bell Guy #1 " :?: How are we going to meet Wal-marts insanely cheap demands and still make a profit :?: we've already lowered our standards for quality and simply can't lower them any further :!: "

Bell Guy #2 " I know, we will just shorten the chains by a third and make the packaging as vague as possible, this will make our prices lower per package and we will sell more packages at the same time when the customer realizes they don't have enough chain, and as an added result we will sell more of those junk chain breakers we sublet out to a 3rd world country manufacturing facility, double win :!:  "

Bell Guy #1 " :D Yaaayyyy, We can keep our jobs :D "

(high five)

... for the record, Ive never had a problem with the Bell chains other than the not-long-enough thing.

LOL.......This is friggin hilarious! You should be writing sitcoms......(still laughing)

Hilarious but true. As a sales/marketing guy I can tell you it's about 99% accurate. The only part that's missing is the part where next year, the guy who's the boss of the guy that thought of shortening the chain to keep the price low gets promoted to low level executive status.

Yep then next year a guy thinks to make the links out of metal that is 0.00000000000000000009 thousandths of an inch thinner, to save a million dollars a year. Then the next year it gets another gram shaved off, and another till we're left with a chain that is weaker than the rusty one we pulled off of it. Someday people will get fed up with the low quality Chinese crap and America will start making good stuff again like back in the 50's but I don't see it taking off any time soon.

Just a follow up to the topic. I bought a KMC chain from my LBS for about the same price as two WalMart chains, which, as we discussed earlier are required to create the length of one usable chain.
So I bought the 112 link chain, the longest one available and it was about 8 links too short for my Dyno cruiser build!!!

Im using a large chainwheel but my axles are way deep (forward in the case of a Dyno) into the dropouts in order to hug the fender.
Just wanted to pass this along to folks who might tackle this in the future.

Yep! Chains too short and broken breaker tools both bought from wal-crap. Not, again. I bought a breaker from the LBS and I use garage door opener chain for my bikes. I have four or five openers in my workshop at work that are bad. Enough chain there for ten bikes. 8) I hear that the quality control dept. at Bell is a retired group of Hooked On Phonics Chinese who can't count chain link or operate eyeglasses.
