I just got home from the Hoosier Show. I didn't really find anything special. I bought some parts and sold a bike. I did enter my latest creation Western Flyer in the Rat Rod category and got first place. Not too bad for the first time out. I had thought about taking Grumpy with me, but decided to let it sit this one out. Funny story though...when I was loading up at like 530a this morning, I realized the bike wouldn't fit in my Commander with the apes, so I took them off and laid them on my workbench. I loaded up all my stuff and hit the road. I got to the show over 2 hours later and guess what I forgot? Yeah...the APES. I had a set of bars, but I was running around looking for grips. Anyway, here is the bike with the trophy...minus the apes!

Congrats! Your bike looks awesome with either bars!

I lost out to this thing at the last show I was in! Straight out of a barn, dead grass & cobwebs still on it. This bike hasn't even had a screw turned on it since found. Back tire was flat by the 2nd day of the show. To say the least, I was a little disappointed. :x cool old rusty bike, but not a rat in my opinion. :? Sure wish I had that tank & forks though!

Hey Pick...I think people have a hard time judging what a rat rod is. Look at King's, Peat's, Critter's or my bike from RRBBO7. Do you guys consider those "rat" bikes with their well fabricated parts, slick paint jobs, etc?

Maybe whoever was judging your contest thought a rat was a barn find!

I agree with ya 100% Terry! I think rats come in all shapes, sizes, painted, shiney, rust & whatever. My opinion is that they should at least have something done to them, otherwise they are just an old bike, which is cool in it's own way. This particular bike I don't think would even be rideable. Every bike I have built can be ridden, maybe not comfortable, but you can ride it. I also realize you can't have 100 catagories for awards. I would have a hard time judging bikes myself, because I guess I like most all styles of builds. It's the creativity that peaks my interest. I really don't set out to win an award, but if it happens it is icing on the cake. Meeting with my fellow builders for BS sessions & bike talk is what I enjoy. I am amazed at the awesome things you guys come up with, but this particular bike had nothing at all done to it.

Great job Terry. Love the tank. I have two western flyer tank bikes with the jet plane like yours and I offered one of them up for trade this week but it didn't make the deal. WHAT WAS I THINKING? THANKFULLY I still have both. So glad it didn't and still have both. Awesome jet plane stencil.

Congrats on your efforts!!

Yeah, at some point, I would like to turn this tank into a "complete" Western Flyer. I found a black/white WF frame and fenders, but it was pretty crusty. I figure a decent tank is the hard part, so I'll be patient and hopefully the rest of the parts will turn up.

Yours was the better Rat bike, hands down, the other was "best unrestored," the judges just got it wrong.
