welder advice

I've come to the point in which I must have a welder to continue with my build! I have only dabbled with welding and have never owned one. Any advice you may have on what to look for in a welder and what I can expect to pay for one would be greatly appreciated!

what gauge(thickness) are you going to be welding? do you have 220/240 where youre going to be welding? is it going to be only steel or will you be doing aluminum? do you want clean welds or do you mind alot of ugly splatter?
i know it seems like alot of questions but all of them will need some serious though before dropping any cash on a welder(not worth buying something just to find out it wont work for what you need or getting something cheap just to dump a ton of cash into upgrading it)

The 110 welders work great, stay away from flux core wire, run the gas. Miller is a good one to check out.
