I picked this up the other day & just finally had a chance to look at it, but I'm not exactly sure what I have. The serial number is on the left rear dropout and dates as an August 1954 build. It has a 2-speed automatic Bendix rear hub.
I'm not sure if the springer is original, or just really old. There's no key lock, and from what I've seen of older Schwinn springers, the main fork legs are always painted? I also don't think the seat or chain guard are original.
The head badge is different than any others I've seen too. I'm slowly cleaning the paint off of it now, but it isn't stamped steel or cast plastic. It's a clear plastic that's reverse-cast from behind, and around the Schwinn name are "rays" radiating out.
So any ideas if this is a special model, or just one that someone customized back in the day?
