this was on the Schwinn forum and I wanted to see what the verdict was over here

my thoughts
I love the creativity of a nice custom
I admire the beauty of an old original
I respect the effort of a beautiful restoration
and reproductions are umm reproduced

as much as i love customs and i really do there is just something about riding an original unrestored bike that has to be experienced .

although i am picturing an original schwinn black phantom with drop bars turned boardtracker and that sounds sweet

I can only vote one? I love bikes of all types, if given the oppertunity I would've voted for three of the four options. My actual vote went kustom because out of all of my bikes, I don't think any of them are completly stock...Kelly

why custom

well I like all ..but...I vote custom :

Restored--Don't want to ride it except in a parking lot...It took to much work and hart ache ;too prestine.; yes I do dig a good resto though :|

Origanal---I have trouble with my conscience taking apart a bike that has made it this far "ALL THERE"

CUSTOM---I can go crazy with ideas

Reproduction--usually made cheaper [quality] they just beg to be customized!! and not feel guilty..HAVE @ THEM:lol:

I gotta go with custon (Kustom). But Originals make me drool alot! Restored is cool but it's not as cool as orignal.
So ...... Leave it alone or make it your own! 8)

hmmm... My vote would actually fall somewhere between custom and restored. I think its cool to restore an old vintage bike, but not too much.

I restore parts of my bikes, but I'm not going go crazy trying to find everything the original bike had. If I find some cool aftermarket handlebars for my, somewhat, original bike.... then aftermarket it is.

BUT, I cant really say that I build custom bikes. I don't really do much past different bolt on parts and what not.

I'd definitely say custom now that I think about it. Way more fun that way.

For the most part, I agree with Hooch.

Customs - a well executed custom is poetry in metal & paint

Original - a time capsule to be savoured

Restoration - craftsmanship & attention to detail

My view on reproductions is a bit mixed and based a lot on past experience in the world of musclecars. While a reproduction part may not be the best choice for a resto - assuming the part in question is a quality repro - sometimes it is the only viable alternative. Some parts like grips and tires rarely survive the years intact. For example, the A'me Tri grips on my GT have turned to go. Yech. In some instances, the reproductions are actually better quality than the originals - this is not uncommon with musclecar parts - think Chrysler E-body door panels (personal experience with that one  )

On the other hand, cheap repro parts are just that, cheap parts.

Quality repro parts can be great raw material for customizing. If you're going to cut it up and paint it, who cares if it's not original, NOS or whatever? It's the hand of the customizer thats important, not which factory it came out of.

For the record, all my bikes fall into the "customized category"

My first criteria for building a bike is will it be comfortable to ride and will I enjoy looking at it. I restored a Raleigh Chopper a while back for me. I changed the cranks with the same crane chainring but adult size cranks and I repainted it gold because I liked the color. It was a somewhat resto/custom job and I loved riding that bike for 6 years before I sold it. But I have much respect for those of you who do whatever, original, custom, resto, reproduction. The main thing is to make and RIDE something in my opinion. :D

My personal prefernce is original if it is found original. If it's half gone (parts removed or worn to nubs) then go custom crazy.

My favorite bikes are originals that are modified with "period correct" style parts or mods. That is my OPINION of what I like the most, but I like a lot of things.

My dad has looked at my bikes and commented about things his broter and friends would all do to their Schwinn Corvettes in the 60's, like strapping a piece of leather around the Bendix hub to keep the grease off. That kind of stuff facinates me and bikes are so plentiful that I can't bring myself to tear up a survivor.

I plan on doing some things to my Typhoon but keeping the original parts in tact and safely put away, ready to go back if they had to. This again is my perogative. Techincally, I guess deviating from the stock config. is custom, but there I go with definitions again. Sorry.

I hate looking at poorly executed "custom" work, when it would have been better to leave something alone than mess with it, however, I have yet to see an example of this here. I see it more with cars.

The bikes on this site continually amaze me.
