I just did my first wheel build a week ago; came out awesome. I used a combination of four resources (plus probably a few others along the way, but these are the main four):
1. The aforementioned Atomic Zombie tutorial.
2. Roger Musson's "A Practical Guide to Wheel Building: 3rd Edition". This is an e-book available for like $5. Not only is it probably the best wheel building book out there, I also read it from start to finish in no time.
3. Arup Sen's series of videos on Youtube on wheel building. An excellent visual resource.
4. The wheel-building chapter in "Glenn's New Complete Bicycle Manual". This book is easily the most valauble bicycle reference I've ever bought; you can probably get it on Amazon for 99 cents.
Not all of those references are 36-hole specific, but some are valuable for learning technique. It's also extremely helpful to look at other 36-hole wheels and pay attention to their lacing patterns. Good luck!
