I'm new here and to Rat Rodding for that matter. I bought a 1948 Columbia that I'm considering buying replacement wheels and tires for it. I'd like to know what the widest rim and tire that would fit the frame. I measured the distances and the front fork is approximately 2.70" wide and the rear stays can accommodate close to 4" inches. What are some common sizes for the 26" vintage bicycle in the fatter tire.

Back then, they basically came in "Balloon" (@2.125") and "Middleweight" (@1 3/4") flavors. If you're measuring correctly, then you could probably fit up to a 2.5" up front and maybe get a Boa-G in the back. Remember to leave some wiggle-room...

i would go 2.5 in the back & 2.35 in the front , no reason to nave a tire rub issue
then maybe some fender will still fit!
