Dude if you think you can afford to drive(note the key word here is drive) a BMW for a couple G's you are living in fantasy land or smoking some really good chit. If you are a minor lay off the smoke. Learn from others who have experience, it will save you a lot of dissapointment. Spending a couple of grand on a car that takes up space rotting broken in your driveway or yard is not going to be very satisfying, even if it has those shiny BMW emblems on it.

Even a good used $10,000.00 BMW will cost you more than $2000.00 in maintenence in a very short time. Plus insurance, gas, and tickets. These days they are starting to crack down on kids who get tickets by taking their licenses, and you are far more likely to get a ticket in a BMW than a more modest car.

I am currently in the market for vehicle, but I wouldn't keep a brand new BMW if someone gave it to me. The cost of maintaining, and insuring it is way out of my budget. Trust me I am sure I have way more money to spend, or you wouldn't be talking about selling some bicycles to afford it.

Here's a hint: Chicks dig guys that have money to spend on them way more than guys who are broke because they need to fix their broken POS BMW rotting in their driveway. She would rather ride in a Huyndai or any other running car to dinner and a movie than have sex in the back seat of your broken BMW in your parents driveway. Trust me it's true.

There is such a thing as a BMW that could be aquired for a modest amount, but you will not drive it for long without spending a whole lot more money. BMW's are image cars for rich middle age people, and their spoiled rotten kids, not for kids who need to sell their bicycles to get some money for a car.

lets get a few things settled
first of all i know this one guy that drives a bmw
he is 17 and works part time
the car is 24 years old and it is running just fine
he got the car for 1500 bucks and since he has had it in the past 7 months hes put bout 250 or 300 bucks in it
o by the way this guy is my brother
your first car shouldnt be a 10,000 car it should be something outta someones front yard so you learn responsiblity and can take care of it
i don't care either if it sit in the driveway
it DOES have shiny bmw emblems on it and i own one and you dont

and its not called selling bicycles to afford it
its called prioritizing and growing up and realizing whats imporntant
a bike cant get me to work but a car sure can
even if it is a rusty bmw that sits untill i can afford to drive it
how many bikes does one guy need?
you can only ride one at a time
besides they are nothing but a material thing anyways

if i need a car to get a girlfriend it looks like i'm staying single for the rest of my life
its called managing your money
afford the car and the girlfriend
or just the car or just the girlfriend
cant to both well then say bye to one or the other
AND i'm not having sex in the backseat of my car as a 16 year old kid
that stuff needs to wait till your married anyways

and if you think that ios true you have been living in a cave
not RICH SPOILED peopel drive bmws
this just goes to prove how ingnorant SOME people really are
and just to let you no
everybike i own cost me money
I pay for it

I agree, apparently this posting got out of hand!

And Mopar, you might be able to delete this posting all together?

"Save the Drama for your Mama"

I agree, try to delete this post, or talk to someone who can. Everybody is entitled to thier own opinion here, but this thread seems to have turned a piecefull forum, into an upset forum.

why all the anger? What kind of reaction would you expect on a site devoted to bicycles when you outright say that bikes are material things not worth collecting and that being grown up means to get rid of your bikes and get a car. take it all with a grain of salt. Do what you're going to do, but don't pick fights over it. let the bike love live!

"There's a whole lotta love out there, man"

i guess i probably sound like a hippy or something, but I am just trying to keep it positive. There is so much good energy on this site and I'd hate to see it degrade into the silly arguments you get on certain other bike forums, the reason why I stopped hanging out on those forums. So yeah, "can't we all just get along?"

yeah.....this thread does need to die!!!
we all have our own opinions on whats a 'cool' car......leave it at that. mopar i can say that from what ive seen on here you seem to have it pretty much together and your head on straight(i WASNT bashing on bmws at all just letting you know upkeep will cost abit more that other makes is all......) no cut the kid some slack.hes working, trying to buy his first car, going to school(im assuming getting decent grades),not running around, ditching, and doing drugs or drinking or getting arrested! so hes got to sell some bikes or parts to fund the car(havent we all sold bikes and or parts to fund things before ourselves?!? i have!)
im still amazed that he still comes here after this post began to look like one that belonged on the pacific site!
mopar....good luck with the car and everything else...keep on keeping on!(sheeeesh never thought ID try to be the reasonable one in life  )
BTW.....NOW LET THIS DIE!!!!!!!!! PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEAASE!

Well, I've avoided this thread untill now, but I'm gonna throw my 2 cents in for anybody who is interested...

I've been a mechanic for around 18 years now. Before that, when I was a kid, I always tried to work on my cars myself. I loved it, so I made a career out of it (bad idea, but that is another story). Most of my time turning a wrench was for a SAAB dealer. Now I work for Mercedes-Benz. As such, I've worked on all sorts of cars and I know people who have owned just about every car made.

BMWs are no different that any other European cars. Even older ones are pretty complicated and parts indeed, can be pricey. I know a guy that used to have an old BMW 2002...he loved that car! It burned a little oil, but it never left him stranded. I also know guys who have owned newer BMWs that were complete money pits. It's not the rare electrical problem that will kill you, it's the maintenance costs.

I have to ask you, are you able to work on cars yourself? Do you have acsess to a friend or family member with a large aray of tools and diagnostic materials and equiptment? Perhaps an automotive program in your high school? I'm not trying to steer you away from a BMW, but if you go that route, I hope you can handle this stuff. Believe me, it's not as easy as it looks in some cases. Without getting into specific examples, I can tell you that I have seen some really expensive cars come in with with problems that took several hours to diagnose, only to find the problem was created by the last tech who worked on it.

Anyway, if Ican offer you one piece of advise, it is this. When you find a car you love, take it to a DEALER to have it checked out. They will charge you anywhere from 1-3 hours labor (depending on how thorough the inspection) to look the car over. They can tell you eveything about that car including hidden problems that some independent shop might never know about. It will be the best money you ever spend, so don't skimp here! If you buy a car and find a month later it needs all the struts replaced, you're gonna feel the pain of owning a European car. Trust me...get it looked at ahead of time.

Personally, I would like a vinatge Mustang. I had a '67 Stang when I was 18...man I want one again...

i'm not mad at you guys i just feek the wya that was all posted was very unnecassary and unappropitae
and i do no what it cost and how it is owning a bmw
my brother got one
drove it for a month and then in sat in the garager on jackstands for about another month before he had money to fix it
and yes i have accsess to tools
not everything but enough to get by with

and if you guys are thinkin an old chrysler would be cheaper it really isn't
by the time you get dine finding a decent car parts for it will kill you
you cant just run out and buy a part all the time
not only that
the cars alone are getting expsensive
