I finally made it home and wanted to thank you again for the cruise, info and history lesson. Savannah is a terrific place to ride and I'm really glad we were able to hook up. I see you got your 'horny' cabled up. I like the way the horn seems to 'nod' as it is activated.
I know it has been said many times on websites, but it is especially true here with bikes. Pictures just do not do justice for these builds. StarsNbars SCREAMS cool. It really needs to be seen to be appreciated for the time and effort put into it. And I didn't get to see it completed!

Thanks Bryan!!! That was a fun ride and meet up for me too. I really dug your mo fatta mo betta ride too.
It's always cool to capture any of these custom builds with a photo. Glad you like starsNbars so far.

Continuing with the paint on the various parts. Gotta tweak the forks with more of the brown rust now.

Decided I needed to darken the tank a little more. This pic shows one side darkened more

Basically all I do is coat it with walnut stain, let is sit a minute or so, then start lightly wiping off some of the excess.

Added one of my torch cut skulls to the seat

I forgot that I had this #010 RRB head badge for next year's BO10

Got all of the rust or hammered black paint done on the parts.
Hopefully I can lay down the starsNbars polished rust patterns on the forks, shifter, and nanner beehive brace tomorrow.

Cleaned up the frame and the headbadge.
Here is the before on the badge

Putting my Ralphie Rat Rod sticker on the seat tube above the BB
Here is a view through the twin down tubes
I took a little steel wool to the sticker to take some of the sheen off. I'm also going to age it a little with a torch and maybe some stain.

Early on after I decided on the starsNbars theme, I picked up these cool Cheerios 1976 Bicentennial stickers. I am going to put them either on the chain stays or the seat stays. I will definitely need some glue underneath these and also they need some seriously aging with torch and stain and sand paper. I really like the Don't Tread On Me design though.

Started working on the starsNbars patterns.
First up I will show my failed experiment. I thought it would be cool to have the shifter case in the starsNbars. I already had it matching the rust of the seat pretty good.

Taped it off

Painted the "polished rust" areas with the Hammered black. It just made this little piece way too busy. I sprayed over it again with the textured rust paint almost right away.

Now on the the painted pieces that work great.
I didn't want to take away from the speed holes on the nanner beehive bracket, so no stripes.
Just one star within a star

Painted the tailight Hammered Black

Rusted up the horn with a blend of the textured rust paints.

Without further fanfare, here are the starsNbars forks!!!!
Used the glow in the dark dollar store stars to make a pattern mask and taped off the stripes

I couldn't be happier with the way these turned out. I couldn't resist mounting one of the forks even though the black isn't completely dry.

Once that black is dried and dulled slightly it should be a good match King!

Luke.

Luke, actually the hammered black has just about the same level of sheen as the polished rust on the seat

Once this years competition is finished I can see a market for "instruction set and materials disguise kit to make your high value bike less likely to be stolen".

So many great examples of real rust, patina and artificial matching it as well. The average bike thief looking for shiny targets has no idea how many great bikes at rat rod are no where as old or rickety as they may seem at first glance.

Glad to see you are acheiving your targets in balancing rusty with black on this bike.
