Adding Handbrakes to ‘58 Schwinn American

I have another question. How far back in the dropout should the rear rim be? It was all the way back but the chain was too loose. So the tech removed a link for me but it’s brought the rim to almost the end of the dropout. This worries me. Not sure my worry is warranted or what can be done. Any...

So I put on my bike chain but it feels a little floppy. But I’m not sure how tight is ok? Is there A measurement to go by?

Adding Handbrakes to ‘58 Schwinn American

Hi. So i will be using my Schwinn American to commute around town and for exercise. I’m not too confident in the coaster brake stopping quickly when I need it. Can a freewheel and handbrakes be added? Has anyone done this? Thank you.

    7 Speed Schwinn Klunker Build

I was thinking a traditional 5 x 2 setup. But either will do if it achieves the affect I’m looking for. Not sure if both are possible and if one is more desirable than the other. I am considering commuting to work by bike and my single speed Klunker would make it hard on the stretches where it...

    7 Speed Schwinn Klunker Build

That is something to think about. I have also considered making it a ten speed and using a different crankset. Will my frame accommodate that set up?

Help: 1958 Schwinn American Klunker Build

So the stem on my other bike is 6 inches( 154.4 mm). The stem I’m looking at to replace it is 180mm. Just over an inch longer. Do stems come down right to the end of the fork tube or is there clearance in case I want to use a different stem?

Help: 1958 Schwinn American Klunker Build

They were 9/16ths. I was sure they were 1/2inch when I ordered them. If I had a dime every time I was sure. Back they go. Time to order something different. Which is fun I guess lol.

Help: 1958 Schwinn American Klunker Build

So I bought 1/2 inch pedals thinking they would fit my original cranks but they won’t go in. They seem to wide at the threads. Totally confused??? Any help here would be appreciated.

    A MOUNTAIN RAT BMX

What type of MTB fork is it when it is squared off at the top and not rounded. This is for rigid forks not suspension. I see them in photos but I don’t know how to differentiate them when I want to do a search. Any help is appreciated.

Help: 1958 Schwinn American Klunker Build

Can anyone recommend a solid set of three piece cranks? Doesn’t have to be the best brand. Just something that works well but won’t break the bank. Don’t want a cheap-o pair either. Thanks all.

Help: 1958 Schwinn American Klunker Build

I have a few bikes shops in close proximity to me. I’ll get some quotes and see. If not it might be a good skill to learn.
