Thought about a pair of something like this and an air tank? 🤔

Baomain Pneumatic Air Cylinder SC 32 x 500 PT 1/8, Bore: 1 1/4 inch, Stroke: 20 inch, Screwed Piston Rod Dual Action 1 Mpa https://a.co/d/83oGnaE
I hadn’t considered an air version but I did look at an electric version. The problem for me was that it seemed like it would take half a minute to go up or down. I bet that air cylinder would be really quick. Maybe too quick. 😄😎

I got some lower poundage struts, 100lb vs the 120lb I had on there, and still not able to compress them all the way down to chopper mode. I searched for how to make an adjustable rocker mount but google only turned up hot rod engine rockers. Very cool, but not what I need here. Can any of you engineering oriented guys point me in the right direction? I'd really like it to function as intended.

I wonder how the bike would react (extension, compression, ability to remain fully extended) with only 1 cylinder?

First off, what a grand success to ride it around without needing the safety gear. This looks so fun.
It's my guess that the problem has more to do with geometry than the cylinder rating. Almost like the current extended triangle is like a hyperextended knee and it just cant budge to grt back to and angle that it can compress.

Riding it in the up position looks like you are riding a Penny farthington with a small wheel on the front.
It kind of does doesn’t it? 😆

I might test that. In the long run I’m concerned it might twist the swing arm.

I think you’re right about the geometry. I can get it to compress around 6” or thereabouts but it just pops back up. I might try a higher mounting point in the rear to change the angle and see if that might help.

And it really is a blast to ride. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in building one.

I noticed you didn't appear to have any climbing standoff at all. Are the pedals low enough to be able to climb up or climb down as you are starting off or stopping?

I can climb up using just the pedal using the wall to balance but I haven’t tried a rolling mount yet. I think I can do it with just the pedal but may add a BMX peg or something if I need it.

What's next for this tall coolness??????

It’s still pretty hot in the driveway but I need to finish up. I added a BMX peg to help step up to the pedal. That works pretty well.

It took 2 adapters to fit this laid back BMX seat post. I was hoping that if my weight was farther back it might help to compress the struts but no change. It did make it so that I can’t get the clamp tight enough to hold the seat post from slipping around.

Then I moved the rear strut mounts as far up and back as I could to see if that would help. The struts compress maybe an inch more now but still don’t go all the way down.

I don’t think I ll be able to get the chopper mode working correctly by the deadline. I still need to finish off the Doom Slug and get some final pics. Today and tomorrow are all the time I have left.

I’m going to try to mount the rear strut mounts farther rearward and put the cruiser bars back on to see if that will get these struts to compress all the way. I tried it with just one strut on and that did compress it but then it wouldn’t stay up.

Fun fact- the rear tire was low this morning so I aired it back up to 35psi and rode it around for a while testing the peg and shocks. When I was drilling the new holes for the struts the rear tube just blew out. I'm glad that didn't happen while I was riding it!

Sorry about the terrible lighting. It’s pretty bright out there right now.

Man you are brave! I love this build but I would be scared to ride! I hope you perfect the dismount. Glad the tire issue was solved while down on the ground. ✌🏻

It's actually really easy to ride and very fun. The dismount is easy, I just swing my leg over to the left side then drop down while rolling slowly and apply brakes. Rolling mounts are taking a bit of practice. So far it's both hands on the bars and covering the brakes, get it rolling with right foot on the peg, lean the bike to the right and step up to the pedal with the left foot then swing the right foot over kind of all in one motion. Once I'm straddling the bike it balances really easy. I've read that tall bikes balance easier than regular bikes though I don't remember why. That does seem to be the case. I can be barely moving on this thing and it's still very stable. Really fun.

I I was hoping you could build a pair of rockers that would flip over like this, to increase your leverage by a factor of about four, over the piston.

Ah! I can see it now. I was going to try something similar on the other end but this makes sense. Don't know if it will be before the deadline but I'll give this a try. Thanks Ulu!!

Regardless if you get the chopper mode working by the deadline. It's current state is pretty darn wicked!
