    The Wright Special

I decided to paint it black, as most bikes back in the late 1800's were black. Here's the real thing next to mine:

    Reuse old spokes?

I found some info on the CABE about this very topic, single speed to yellow band 2 speed. The yellow band diameter is 1.06 inches wider than the usual one speed hub. Using that info on a spoke calculator I figured this: With a 26" rim, your present spokes are about 258mm at 3 cross. Guessing the...

    ID help please

The dropouts back then were like a trademark, every frame can be IDed by the shape of the dropout. Other features can also determine the manufacturer, but the dropouts are a dead giveaway. Each manufacturer had their own design. I thought Columbia and Monark at first, but the dropouts don't...

Any numbers on the bottom bracket?

    ID help please

It looks from the 50's, can you get a pic of the headtube where the original headbadge was? The shape may be discernable and match up to a brand name.

SHOW ME YOUR WORKSPACE / SHOP

I redid the layout and hung the bikes along the back wall. It looks like more room now.

That number would be 1946 going by the list I have.👍

    A little help here?

Hawthorne was a Montgomery Wards brand, but the bikes were made by the big bike makers back then. This bike was made by CWC, Cleveland Welding Company, whose primary brand name was Roadmaster. Except for small differences in trim and paint they were the same bikes. Hiawatha was the brand name...

    ** The next build off 2024 **

For my compilation, prior to 40, the seat tube was straight?

One of our friends wanted to buy this bike while they visited and took a tour of my shop. Most of the time they want a bike for free and all they have to do is like a bike for me to just give it away. However, the wife handles all bike sales and she usually asks twice what they are worth, so...

    Step thru is a maybe

Colson for sure unless someone went to great lengths to copy the dropouts.

"Colson step thru klunker" That sounds like a winner. Looptail?

    My newest build 54 schwinn

Very well done klunker. It has a lot of great features.👍 The Typhoon didn't come out until 1962, so your 54 frame was one of the 9 balloon models. You can verify if it's a 54 by the number on the left side dropout, the brake side. There wasn't much difference in the Schwinn cantilever frames...

    What's cooking?

I roast cashews at 140c/280f. I get a kilo of unsalted cashews for about 10 bucks and use my air fryer to roast them. It's enough for 4 of the planters cans. I use a tiny bit of liquid smoke and plenty of the milder tabasco, jalapeno and chipotle. Then some olive oil and they are ready to roast...

Does the frame have two holes that line up? Then go for it. Those tags were put into use beginning in 1946, and with that low a serial number would be 1946 as the year. For registration you would have to say it's a 46, otherwise would need a new number stamped somewhere to be legal. Maybe it is...

Well this feels a bit more comfortable.

Welcome. The wheels look good. If the kickback hub has the same number of spokes you might use the same rims and save some dough, although a new set of alloy rims would be lighter and stronger, as would some new tires. You could save the whole original wheelset. The Heavy Duti also looks good...

    Klunker build. (Testride! pg2)

Yep it looks good! A good set of bars might need a new stem also. I would paint it all black, put the tank panel back in with this decal on both sides: But that's just me.

Some Roadmaster decals would negate the need for a lock.
