    Black Phantandem

I took a couple more pictures today. The lighting in the place made it almost impossible to get a good cell phone picture, so sorry about that. It was clearly built for display rather than riding (aside from the ridiculous number of seats). The frame connecting the front to the back...

    Black Phantandem

OK, I apologize in advance for the quality of the photo. I saw this today in a restaurant hung up over the lobby. This is probably the world's only 7-seat Black Phantom tandem: Hopefully it was made from repop parts. To anyone interested, the place is called the Trailhead Brewing Company...

New Walmart Fat Tire Bike coming in a couple weeks

What tire pressure were you running? When I ride my Pug in the snow, I'm at maybe 5 psi. Obviously, it isn't going to float over unpacked snow, snow like that has no structure to support any weight - even snow shoes sink in a bit. I've been able to get away with up to 5 or 6 inches deep...

New Walmart Fat Tire Bike coming in a couple weeks

For me, its because I already have a Pugsley. However, I'm thinking about getting a Masiff to play with just the same...

Fat Tires - How Practical for Long Distance Riding?

I have a friend that rode the Continental Divide, mostly solo and unsupported, on his Pugsly. Texas to Montana, through the mountains, mostly off pavement. He is crazy though...

New Walmart Fat Tire Bike coming in a couple weeks

OK, but Walmart lists it for ages 6 to 11 - I don't think any of us qualify :D Any word on the new 26" model?

Sturmey shifter on a Nexus 3

I'd caution that S-A uses a different cable travel length between 1-2 than between 2-3, whereas Shimano does not. That means that if you've got it set up right for one gear change, the other will be off somewhat. I would make sure that you're actually getting full engagement at both gear...

Schwinn frame tire & wheel ?

Well, like I said above, the frame is a Columbia, so it doesn't really help you. But to answer the question, no, there wasn't much more room there. I put a 24x3 Berm Master on a 57mm rim on, but it required a bit of work to get it to fit. This is what it looked like before I spread the stays...

Schwinn frame tire & wheel ?

The perspective makes it look worse than it is, but still this illustrates the minimal clearance on the fork: Yes, its a Schwinn fork on a Columbia frame. Some modification required to make that work. This might show the clearance slightly better:

New Walmart Fat Tire Bike coming in a couple weeks

Also opens up a bunch of doors for interchangeability of parts, brings it that much closer to modern MTB standards. I know some lament the loss of a threaded headset, but my opinion is that the pros outweigh the cons for this type of bike.

Schwinn frame tire & wheel ?

I put a Felt 2.125" Circuit tire on a 3G 57mm rim, which filled the tire out to a full 2.5". That, in a balloon tire Schwinn Ashtabula fork just fit, with maybe an 1/8" on either side. It was sort of equivalent to putting a balloon tire (on a normal rim) on a middleweight fork. Are all of the...

    bike carriers

I've used both roof and hitch-mount carriers. Sometimes simultaneously. Mostly I just use the roof mount, though my Pugsley typically goes inside the car (simply doesn't fit on any carrier I have). My folks have a platform-type hitch mount carrier. Tires sit in a tray, and a hook clamps...

    Beasts Are Almost Sold Out

Misspelling "Surly" doesn't help, but I would think that having "Pugsley" in the listing ought to be enough. The model has been almost synonymous with fat bike till just recently. Incidentally, I saw over the weekend that the local EMS store has a Kona Wo that's marked down, from $1700 to...

    Looking for a chrome shop

The EPA has made decorative chrome incredibly expensive as a process and most platers have simply stopped offering. If you find someone willing to take your work, you might be stuck with whatever pricing they charge. If they're pricing is based on a lot charge, maybe you can find some other...

    Beasts Are Almost Sold Out

I thought about buying one of these Beasts, but after test riding a Surly at the LBS I skipped right to ordering a Pugsley. No regrets, though I have still considered buying a Mongoose just to have a set of summer tires...

Thoughts on Creme or White tires?

If you ride on crushed gravel paths a lot, like we've got around here, the stone dust tends to make the tires white when dirty. So, in that situation, a white tire would look good...
