What tire pressure were you running? When I ride my Pug in the snow, I'm at maybe 5 psi. Obviously, it isn't going to float over unpacked snow, snow like that has no structure to support any weight - even snow shoes sink in a bit. I've been able to get away with up to 5 or 6 inches deep...

I'd caution that S-A uses a different cable travel length between 1-2 than between 2-3, whereas Shimano does not. That means that if you've got it set up right for one gear change, the other will be off somewhat. I would make sure that you're actually getting full engagement at both gear...
