Yes though I want to keep the bike using a pedal break, so a freewheel would require a rear break assembly.

Many thanks all. I have to wait for some nice crisp days to arrive, then will take my time, using the many lighter coat method for a clean finish. Yes, it is a custom bike, not a faithful restoration to original. But I realize I am catching the restoration bug... :)

I re-measured the inside diameter of both Schwinn Stingray crank pedal holes and they are 7/16". But you're saying the standard is 9/16", so I must not be measuring it the right way. :?: I guess I will have to use the old Schwinn pedals for now.
