Also...is it mostly the handlebar diameter size that is variable, or the stem itself that inserts into the headtube? Are headtubes fairly standard sizes? :? Maybe the better question to ask is...what stem will fit my Typhoon bars and my postwar Western Flyer frame? :)

Thanks. That's kind of what I was thinking....that newer bike stems will run the gamut of sizes, but pre-1970 Schwinns would be fairly standard. At least that's what I'm hoping to hear.

Hi, I'm getting so close to finishing my first bike. Just need a couple more bits. I have a pair of handlebars from a 69 Schwinn Typhoon and my frame is a postwar Western Flyer frame. Are basic chrome cruiser handlebar stems generally one standard size? If I got a Schwinn Krate stem from ebay...

Don't necessarily need these for builds, but when working on my project I couldn't get enough of the Dremel tool (to sand tiny parts or in corners, and to clean rust out of the insides of tubes) and also the Black & Decker Mouse, a hand-held vibrating sander. Helped strip paint and smooth bumps...

One more question on the clear coat...how long does it need to cure before I can put the bike back together? I used SprayMax 2K urethane, it was a 2-part in an aerosol can you needed to activate/mix.

Ah - like the same rubbing compound you'd use if you had a scuff in the clear coat of your car?

I have some 2000. I've never wet sanded before and have heard it can be risky business...but if I go about it very gently perhaps it will work.

Even the spokes have their own little loafs of snow on them!! :shock:

Exactly. The whites look more contemporaneous with the bike.....the reds look hot rod. The bike itself is so classic and non-hot rod, I'm inclined to be boring and vote whitewalls.

I was wondering about chrome paint, too. I have some little truss rods that are flaking, and they look OK, but will probably get worse. I'm curious to know whether painting them with "chrome" paint will look better than flaking REAL chrome.

Well yes, BUT, in my defense, I'm skeptical that the can would have specific instructions for how long to wait before putting sticky masking tape on it! It'll have instructions for how long to wait before recoating, but usually that assumes you're just applying more of the same color. That bike...

Bump... I'm trying to be good and use old threads instead of clogging RRB with new ones. :) How long do you need to wait before taping off the bike to add the second color? I am using acrylic aerosol paint (Dupont automotive). It flashes dry really fast but how long does it take to cure, so...
