Looking forward to the beach, but also getting back to final paint removal, BB tube honing, etc…

Got back to working on the Humpster this week. The BB cups on the sealed crankset we’re gonna require more ‘brute persuasion’ than I wanted to apply to the $50 unit. So, I dug out my stash of cups.

Found a decent ‘sacrifical’ set and rubber malleted them into place (gonna get a true set of Schwinn units and bearings soon). Knowing that the BB tube wasn’t too ovaled, I popped them back out and moved forward.
Got the rear triangle, BB/kickstand area, seat tube and top tube stripped and applied a coat of Rustoleum Rust Reformer, so it wouldn’t flash rust.

As you can see in the pic, I still need to grind the remains on the cable guides from the downtube (may also take the one of the chainstay too). Hopefully, I can steal a few minutes over the weekend to knock those out.
Next, I moved momentarily to the fork, I removed the bottom bearing race and tried on the NOS chrome crown I snagged from eBay.

Made sure to measure where the fork dart decals go, for future reference
Gonna sand out the paint chips, rust, etc and get it into primer next.

Got the cable guides ground off yesterday.
Just gotta wire wheel them a bit more and lay down a little Bondo.

Of course this didn’t occur without incident…🙄
Being the idiot I am, I removed the guard because it was interfering with the new grinding disc. It jumped and took a trough of flesh off from knuckle to knuckle.

With the use of some black styrene gloves to protect my ‘new skin’, I filed the frame down and filled in the scars (on the frame, not my finger) with this stuff:

Love it! Dries quickly, sands easily too.

Now the frame, fork and chainguard all have a coat of Rust Reformer. Gonna let it cure for a day or so and then apply white ‘Clean Metal’ primer.
Feels like I’m picking up a little Speed(ster) on this build.

Nice work with the Bondo products and the sanding and paint. The crack about picking up Speed-sir had me rolling like a finely trued wheel! :wondering::grin:
 
Got everything in primer, now to do some test paint panels to make sure the picture in my head will work and the paints ‘get along’.
So glad there’s only 3 pieces to paint for this bike (not counting the wheels and chainring/crank)
