So, after taking the initial pics of the fender, I started studying how I handled paint transitions and such on both Firewing (BO8) and Western Sizzler (BO14).
Right away, I remembered how I did have contrast between the fender and skirts, so I knew I could make that option work. Western Sizzler just helps me visualize the meshing of Higgins skirts with dissimilar parts as well as paint scheme options.

I could see that the rear section of the fender has more color, but on my first mockup, I was only seeing it with the rear tip positioned near the kickstand.

You can see here that there is some of the white from the old fender darts there. So then I thought it might be good if that part was the upper tip that meets up with the tip of the skirt points. That way there would be some ratty white up high similar to the fork and frame darts.

So I cut the fender appropriately with enough extra that I will be able to notch out the bottom to mount to the lower fender bracket. I will make the white fender tip blend with the skirt tips during the fitting work. I will also be able to keep the factory edge.

QUESTION?
I was thinking of using the wd40 and steel wool rubdown of the old fender just like I did the frame.
If I wanted to touchup some paint onto the fender, what process can I use to remove any wd40 residue first?
Or is there a substitute process to the we40/steel wool that is more paint friendly?

When I made that little kickstand I cleaned it with wd40 and sprayed it with rust oleum. Seemed to stick pretty well.

Made the rust look better and the little bit of red pop. Along with what is left of the white fender dart.

I may have solved any patina matching issues.
As I was looking for my wd40, I saw my rusty set of Elgin skirts.
I believe they may match the bike as is 😀

I like that better already! Especially with the bare bones seat really helps tie that in.


Give it the old WD-40 rub and bolt it up! No fuss.


Exactly what I was feeling after I taped them on. The Higgins guards may be a bit more hot rod, but these just flow, blend, and match better
The fender is now about 2-3" short, but that is an easy extension down by the kickstand.
I also need to hammer the kinks and bends out on these skirts a bit.
It's also about time that I add an actual Elgin part to this Elgin :D :D :D Period correct too.
But I'm happy with these.
 
Providence smiles again. And, for what it's worth, I think the fender length is fine as-is.

Thanks. I agree the fender is mocked in the right position relative to the skirt tips, but it now isn't long enough to reach the lower front mounting hole behind the kickstand. I just need to extend to front tip/bracket for the fender.
 
The left guard ended up having a peppered hint of dirty white left.

The drive side is even better with a nice crusty bit of white and rust. The fender has more red on this side too.
