I was tearing apart the wheels that came on my 1956 JC Higgins this weekend to clean them and replace/upgrade the hubs.
When I went take them apart, I noticed they had 14g spokes in them.....hmmm..14g spokes on a mid-fifties balloon tire bike?

Anyone know when they started putting this gauge of spoke on a standard 26" rims?

Any help would be......helpful.

Smoopy,
No mistake, I meant 14g. I thought bikes from that era would have had 12g (thicker, right?).
Guess I've been messing around with too much Worksman stuff..

If 14g are correct, that's good, finding some 10 5/8" stainless spokes is pretty easy. These are going on my 'trailer park queen/parade bike' so no curb jobs, or taking it over any 'sweet jumps'.

See ya Saturday!

Cheers,
Dr. T

All the 30's and 40's prewar Schwinns I've owned had 14 ga spokes. Hasn't that been the standard almost forever? Gary
