At a community yard sale yesterday, I stumbled upon a junk dealer type guy with loads of old bikes. Mostly Walmart type stuff, but a few others too. Couldn't resist rescuing this one for 25 bucks. It's a real Frakenstein project, but it's also oddball cool.

Wacky dual rear brake... I've seen this on Sears 24" Spyders

Brake levers mismatched like everything else on the bike

So what the heck is this?

Nice! A well executed vintage rat. Also has a high flange front hub. Me myself would freshen up the parts needing lubricant and leave it as it is.

It's funny. I've been thinking about all these different directions to take it, like I have a set of 24" BMX cruiser wheels I could put on it, or I could maybe hunt down parts to make it look like the muscle bike it probably started out as... but I think I like your idea better. I have a rear tire in mind, and I'd probably replace the chain and freewheel if they don't clean up, but now I'm thinking it'd be cool to just use as much of the rest of it as I can.

Wait a minute. Dual rear brakes each controlled by a separate lever? No front brake? But, but... a front brake is much more effective than a rear brake, which locks up the rear wheel in an emergency stop. And a single rim brake is more than capable of locking up a rear wheel. Well, certainly a conversation piece. Cool bike!

The Spyder is the only bike I can recall that came with two rear rim brakes. Perhaps, Sears thought that a front brake was not a good thing for young riders (at that time). Grabbing the front brake during a turn can dump you on the pavement quickly.
