ORBO 26.0 X 27.5 Flyer

The quail ornament had a 5/16” tapped hole in the bottom. So a bolt was test added.

I found a couple of stems as a mount idea. The BMX stem is heavy, so steel.
7/8” bar mount so it would fit the extended handlebar tube.

Also have the State stem I started with, the bar clamp is 1” so I would need to add a shim. I would probably cut it down if I used it. Thinking either one would be good solution, but the black aluminum one being the best. A Recycled hood ornament ought to be fairly rat rod on a bicycle.

Any comments?

I had a similar one on my first summer RRBBO bike, Hammered Higgins. Neither one have ever had a drop in them.

If/when you make it to Vegas for an OBC, or just to hang out we can remedy this. lemme know.

Tinkering with the hood ornament quail stem mounting today. I started with the aluminum stem without cutting it up. I used 5/16” NC bolt, washers, nuts and a couple of 1/4” fender washers, drilled out the hole to fit the bolt.

This mounting system would work with the BMX stem also.

I test fit the mockup on the front bar. I’ll have to think about it for a while, not sure if it’s a keeper.

Since you asked, what about having the bird riding on a short front fender? Of course to complete that look you would need a rear fender. That could be a short Stingray style rear fender.

I appreciate your approval. Not my typical rat rod build, oldest parts on it are the tires, chainring and crank arms.

Sometimes it's good for us 'seasoned' veterans to break our own molds once in a while. Applying rat rod techniques to newer frames and parts is cool, too.

Seasoned is right, in more than one way. I’ve done several “new frame builds or personalized customs”. This one is more like a personalized factory concept.

That flask with mount is pretty cool!!

As previous I’ve used one on my first rat rod build off bike. The flasks have never been used, so no BUI’s yet.

Probably could be, or suspended like being in flight. May try the BMX stem which would shorted the projected look.

I should get the fork brake extender parts next week. Then I can hopefully get the front backup brake working, otherwise it’s an old school coaster brake.

BMX version mounted on front bar. @metalchewy might be right on the BMX look, it’s a little more compact. The other bar mount looked too stretched. Might paint the stem matte black. Bird keeps the 95+/-year old patina.

Getting cold again, more snow in forecast. Thinking that this build is mostly complete, at least about to go on hold.

Waiting on brake system parts, snow coming in Tuesday night. So I adjusted the saddle and bars and took one last spin before it gets icy again. Surgery scheduled Monday.

Seems that ethics on eBay is slipping also. Sellers show their location as somewhere in USA but the shipping jumbo mumbo indicative of waiting on some shipping partner stalling to get stuff from somewhere off shore. Some sellers are upfront and say China, Hong Kong or elsewhere. Annoying!

Some of those things on ebay sit in the us on the other side of customs. I've had stuff delayed a week in.califoenia a few times because of this. Sometimes 'fast and free' shipping ain't all that fast.

I ordered a part said to be in stock and would be shipped from Illinois. I’m in KS so that looked to be a safe bet. Now that it is stalled out somewhere, the shipping partner supposedly picked it up but hasn’t gotten it to USPS. In looking at the sellers post it has reverted to being in New Jersey. But the shipping tracking is all in Illinois. The seller says to be patient and wait. They have a 95% approval rating, I guess that was a clue.
(Now I see that the shipping partner is “Yanwen Logistics” a China company)
Everything seems to be jacked up these days, deceptive eBay posting.

Well I survived the robotic hernia mesh repair today. Went pretty smooth just a little bit uncomfortable in the repair area and raspy throat so far. Easier to stand up or lay down than sitting. Ten pound lifting limit for two weeks means bike build on hold. Still waiting on some hybrid brake parts, tracking show them arriving this week. Might still get this “Flyer” finished. Riding is probably a ways out also although Dr said also depends on how you feel.

This fork extender was out for delivery on 2/18/2025. Delivery was canceled by USPS due to snowy blizzard weather conditions and temperature.
