I tore this completely apart over a month ago. Haven't had time to post pictures. Every nut and bolt came apart easily except for the one that holds the rack to the frame, and the upper rear fender mount. Got the seat apart but 2 nuts will have to be ground off.

Cleaned everything the best I could. Scotchbrite and wd-40 on all the painted parts. Cleaned the chrome parts that had chrome left. Regreased all the bearings. Big thanks to snarehead13 for the rear hub bearing and beatcad for the dropstand! 2 bearings in the rear hub were crushed, I used the leftover ball bearings and put them in loose. Worked great.

When I got it:

Current:

Replaced all of the spokes. Was able to save almost all of the nipples, luckily I had a few extra laying around. Still need to true the wheels. Pounded the ducktail back into the front fender.

I'm going to keep the taillight on the rack even though its off a truck or something, it is period with a glass lens. Going to try and wire it up.

For the dropstand, I didn't want to drop $20 on nos shoulder bolts. I found the small bolts that are used on brake calipers to pinch the cable, they worked perfect.

What should I do about the seat? The top pan is missing, and the bottom is a little rough. One bolt hole is rusted through, and the edges are a little soft. Rails and springs seem fine.

I think you can make a new pan pretty easily... maybe even something like this..... http://ratrodbikes.com/forum/viewtopic. ... &start=135

Thats not a bad idea. Not sure I have the tools to cut a piece of metal out like that. Gonna have to give it a shot though.

Or this works too, I've got an old troxel with 2 solid pans, if you want it, I'm sure you could figure out a method to add some metal to stretch the front part. ,

Re: 36 Elgin Rebuild

Very cool project.....love that your leaving it original. I really need to drag mine out and get it operating again. Thanks for the inspiration.
