38 Hawthorne Twin Bar 5 Bar Monark FORKIN AROUND

Picked this here on RRB today. 1937-39 Monark made Ward Hawthorne 5 Bar.
I love the uniqueness of this frame and can't wait to see it up close.

Yes, these are sweet indeed! Looks like an HP Snyder built version versus a Monark build. No rewelds either! I'll be watching for this.

EDIT: What was I thinking? It's most definitely Monark.

Thanks for the additional info. Can you edjamacate me on what makes this a Snyder rather than a Monark built?

From what I can tell from some research, I believe mine is a Monark built version because the twin bottom bars cradle the BB. The Snyder and CWC built ones have the tubes going into the BB similar to normal frames.

Thanks, but I already traded out a bike engine that I sat on for a year. No need for another one to sit on.

Thanks DMan. With many of the photos that I have seen of these frames, it's actually kinda hard to tell that they have twin tubes. Especially the downtubes. I have some paint scheme ideas on how to accent the twin tubes with a lighter accent color on the inside half of the tubes.

Agreed. This is not a frame best complemented by a single solid color. Even something as gaudy as candy cane stripes would accentuate the double tube construction, though I'm not suggesting you follow that ridiculous lead. Some tasteful, carefully applied pattern will make this bike look like the standout it is.

While red/white or red/cream could play into this bike, no worries about the candy cane idea. I'm not going to make this a Rudolph build.
I am thinking the inner color needs to be lighter than the outer color so that it doesn't get lost in the shadows between the tubes. I am also thinking that the center tube will be the lighter color too with darker color highlights. We shall see.

It really is sad it got parted out, I owned it for a good while (thats my picture of it on our property together) the bike had a few problem though, the rack had bolts welded on the underneath, other then that it was a solid bike! to bad... good to see its yours king! hope you do well with it.

Thanks for the info Nick. It is a shame that a complete bike was broken down, but it actually turns out good for me that it was. Since I only have the frame, it gives me the freedom of a blank canvas without the stress of worrying if this part or that part is correct for the bike.

I have most of my springer forks in my office, so I couldn't resist staging a few of them on the Hawthorne after hours with my worksman wheelset.

I think the Monark fork may compliment the frame the best.
