I just use the standard blunt edge tools(1/4 or 3/8 socket extension, long hex drive allen, drift pin, even a wood dowel or small pipe on the bb cups) to knock them out.
But I work my way around a little at a time going to the opposite side of whichever part is coming loose a little.

Then use a block of 2x4 and small sledge to tap them back in.
The headset cups will cut into the wood, and need to be wiped out, but go in without damage.

I always try to be gentle, and only use as much force as absolutely necessary.

All right!!!! I took some PTO!!! I thought I’d score some big-box kids bikes on Craigslist for cheap; $10 for the pair!!

I was stunned at how thin n cheap everything is versus vintage bikes; only thing worth saving was the wheels, tubes n tires! -and those are marginal at best!!! Oh well. I’ll find $10 in value somehow.

Ok; time to try to clean up the forks n chain guard. The chain guard was originally coppertone; fork was white.

Still grinding on these; any tips for getting the paint out of the crevices of the fork?

Pulling frame down to bare bones. Removing kickstand was rough. Some dude on YouTube does it like 5 seconds; i was having some rust issues. Took like 20 minutes!

Frame is clean as a bean and ready for scrub down!

So, I wasn’t completely correct on not altering the patina finish. I had planned on putting a clear coat on it; photos don’t do this frame justice. The worn half stripped coppertone almost glows, as is.

I thought clear would knock it into high gear.

I found this stuff on the inter web. What better paint to put on a multicolored frame, than a multicolored metal effect paint!!!

It’s either going to look really, really cool..... or look like a disaster!!!!

Small risk, but still a risk. We’ll see how it comes out. Hope to paint ASAP, but have a busy schedule.

I use cheap Craigslist/Facebook junk for wheels/tires/tubes often, occasionally score some other useful stuff like cranks sprockets and handlebars

Jude, if you tap your photo on your phone (assuming that's what you are using for a camera) so that your 'edit' function shows up under the photo, and then hit the 'flip' feature, and let it flip all the way around till it's correct , then 'SAVE' the new edited photo; that should do it.

Looking forward to your effects over the RaT-ina look you've created! I don't think I've seen that type of clear before. Bring it on!

So, I’m totally a patina guy. -fake patina, uh.... not so much.

For better or worse, I’ve gotta try to get this chain guard to match the frame.

I’ve got it stripped and am going to try to put fake patina on here.

I think I read somewhere schwinn put like a silver primer on.... here goes!!!

Off to my high-tech paint booth.

I scrubbed n degreased this thing pretty good; silver paint still sort of fish eyed on me. Not a huge deal. I’m going to sand n scuff before adding base coat.

After failing at the big-box DIY stores for a color match, I found out NAPA usually has 1 rockin paint store in any given town; these guys were great and appear to have gotten a pretty close match to a patina that has been stripped and has a mix of original coppertone, silver base coat and burgundy spray bomb.

They can also put your color match into an aerosol can; I did the coppertone blend in aerosol and got the red in touch up.

And.... I’m falling into the schwinn trap: I had a real nice set of black chubby schwinn grips I was going to use. I’m afraid I’m Wimping out and doing white grips n probably white seat.

I’m doing a peroxide soak on the grips to try to whiten. I guess hair places have like 40%-50% hydrogen peroxide concentrations, my closet has 3%.

I’ll try that first.

So, um, yeah.... after 3 days of peroxide and UV treatment, uh.... we’re moving in the right direction I guess....

As we enter hour 9 of a slow, steady downpour it occurred to me maybe upstate New York is not the best place for ANY process that includes UV.

Chad, I’m taking your advice on the bleach!!!

So, I’m bleaching my mega old grips and they’re turning a nice shade of um.... lavender? Lol

I’m still ahead with the bleach I think. -if I tried to do the peroxide/ UV combo deal; we’re going on hour 33 straight of rain here in upstate NY. Not a lot of UV going on up here.

Ok; the bleach the grips experiment is done! I Just can’t get rid of what is now a purple-ish hue on the top, most damaged, darkened side.

If we ever get sun again, I’m going to try the hydrogen peroxide deal again; this time with the pro-hair care higher concentration stuff!

Will need to pick some up sometime I’m running around town.

And, the good news is, it looks like the Napa paint guys knocked the patina coppertone match out of the park!!!

It looks like my silver base coat was a good idea too.

Bad news is, I’m still getting the fish eye finish on this part! As this is a rough patina finish and I should be able to fade it out, I have no idea why I keep getting the uneven finish.

I chalked up the silver fish eyes to being the very end of the can.... I Sanded, scuffed and washed this part and I still got this!!!

I’m going to tinker with it ‘til it looks “natural.”
