apple zucchini cinnamon. that's gotta be a winner.
Oh heck yeah it is! I love it! 😍
But the rest of the family is still a bit hesitant. But that leaves more for me...😂

Besides putting the plot number on the shed, there didn't happen a lot of building in the last few weeks.

I mostly was busy with other (family and work) stuff and as the days get shorter very quick there is not much time after work to get some real work done outside. But in one week my autumn break starts and I will have two (hopefully) full weeks to get some stuff done. I will also transfer both of my bike builds to the shed to max out the time spent there. As you might remember inbetween 1pm and 3pm I'm not allowed to make noise, so I will use that time to work on both bike builds (Skinny'matic and Hope4muscle).

Today I did some long overdue cleanup behind my shed. Over the time I had amassed a lot of scrap wood. Too much to burn it all, a lot of it from the previous owner of the garden, but most of it leftovers from building...
Here's the view before:

The trunk fills up pretty quick:
IMG_20221023_145155123.jpg

Most of the scrap wood gone now:
IMG_20221023_153330795_HDR.jpg

The car might be slightly overloaded, but it's only a short drive to the local recycling center:
IMG_20221023_164250274_HDR.jpg

First thing tomorrow morning will be to unload the car and then fill it up again with the rest of the scrap wood and all the useless scraps of roofing and other metall stuff...

Today I took care of a storage problem. We harvested a lot of apples but had no proper way to store them, so we had put them in some buckets. With no possibility of air circulation quite a few started rotting pretty quick.
IMG_20221024_112441001.jpg

A few days ago I had seen this:
IMG_20221008_155343417.jpg

So I pulled some pallet slats out of my stash and went at it
IMG_20221024_115537053_HDR.jpg

And a bit later I had these crates:
IMG_20221024_141634400_HDR.jpg

A perfect fit for the storage compartment:
IMG_20221024_144906505.jpg

With all three in, there's about 4mm space to the upper frame left:
IMG_20221024_145903681.jpg

But in front of the crates was a bit of space left, so I built this:
IMG_20221024_155316376_HDR.jpg

It's meant for this: 😁
IMG_20221024_155434414.jpg

And it's a perfect fit! 👍

More to follow during the next days...

When I arrived in the garden today I was greeted by this fancy piece of art:
IMG_20221026_101809513.jpg

A bit later the first task of today was done:
IMG_20221026_114506837_HDR.jpg

IMG_20221026_111911915.jpg

After that I had to take care of my "workbench":
IMG_20221026_114541610_HDR.jpg

For the next tasks I need a lot of pallette slats, so I started to dismantle the first two
IMG_20221026_125642759_HDR.jpg

Then it was time for lunch break and some coffee, so I finally installed my little cooker. The gas bottle will find it's place underneath the counter.
IMG_20221026_141128093_HDR.jpg

Coffee cup is empty now, so it's time to get to work again. See you later!

After finishing my coffee I got a a fair amount of prepwork done:
I dismantled some more pallets and got a good amount of usable slats out of it. Some of them will be used to finish off the doors and some to build a table for the shed.
IMG_20221026_164341089_copy.jpg

I also got the boards cut to build the remaining floor part of the sleeping den:
IMG_20221026_162848489_copy.jpg

While at it, I cleaned up a bit more behind the shed...

Today I finally managed to trim the shed door!
Yesterday it still looked like this:

And now this is it in it's finished state:
IMG_20221027_123308582_HDR_copy.jpg

Now I need to do the same on the green door and then the outside of the shed is finally done! I'll post another time lapse video later, but first I have to get my flu shot this afternoon...
See you tomorrow!

As of today the outside of the shed is done (for now at least. It seems to be similar as with bikes: things like this never are really done... ;) )!

This morning the green door looked like this:

And finally in the afternoon I had this:

A little closer look:

Here's todays time lapse:

And this is what I did after the door was done: Shelving...

It feels a bit weird working on the shed while everyone else is building bikes but I really need this project done before I can get started on my bike builds ( maybe I'll pull the skinny build and spare it for the summer...)
So what happened here in the last few days?
On Saturday I started to build the table. Again I used pallet slats. The first version was 6 slats wide and served me and the kids well as a impromptu table for our little campfire grill evenin.

IMG_20221029_181315514.jpg

IMG_20221029_182925366.jpg

But I quickly realized that it was a bit to wide for the shed so first thing this morning I narrowed it down to 5 slats.
IMG_20221031_104207365_HDR.jpg

And some serious thinking and tinkering later I had this table done:
IMG_20221031_120113429_HDR.jpg

IMG_20221031_124644232_HDR.jpg

And it even folds down (not fully flat but good enough for me):
IMG_20221031_114821196_HDR.jpg

After that I added a little seat with shelfing space underneath to the left wall:
IMG_20221031_161721667.jpg

IMG_20221031_161729998.jpg

Next item on my list is the sleeping den. But first I need to cross off some items from the evergrowing honeydo list...

First order of business today (honeydo list...) was to buy and plant a prune tree:
IMG_20221101_141455089_HDR.jpg

With that out of the way I could focus on the sleeping den. After cleaning out all the materials I had stored up there, I could quickly put up the floorboards I already had prepped last week:
IMG_20221101_122108447.jpg
They sit nice and flush with the other boards:
IMG_20221101_122122641.jpg

IMG_20221101_122139952.jpg

On the front edge is enough clearance to add some edge trim later on:
IMG_20221101_122143551.jpg

Then I went at hacking the foldable ladder I had stashed away behind the shed:
IMG_20221101_153348026_HDR.jpg

As I didn't want to use the frame I had to tweak the ladder a bit. I switched the upper ladder hinges so that all hinges fold in the same direction.
IMG_20221101_160113112.jpg

IMG_20221101_160616915.jpg

Like this the ladder is able to stand stable without the complicated original hinging mechanism:
IMG_20221101_160744965.jpg

If not in use it can be pulled and folded up into the empty roof space :
IMG_20221101_173028825.jpg

The whole mechanism needs some more fine tuning, but I like it already

Today I got the sleeping den done.

I started with several sheets of 4mm cork.
IMG_20221102_114436695_HDR.jpg

The top ones were a leftover that was stashed in our basement, but obviously they got wet at some point so I did only use the new ones...

All layed out:
IMG_20221102_122202452.jpg

And done!
IMG_20221102_164800263.jpg

The space is about 2m deep and 1,2m wide/high, so suitable to comfortably sleep two kids or one adult. I will add some stash areas along the walls by running some pallet boards just above the length beams right and left.

I also trimmed off the inner edges of the rear wall, just to realize that the window isn't centered, but who cares...
IMG_20221102_161858051.jpg

I also took care of the somewhat difficult handling of the ladder. I realized that partially the problems came from the rope getting caught on the protruding screws from the hinges. So I had to set the pulleys a bit off.
IMG_20221102_173534049.jpg

Now it works pretty smooth:

I must say, the view from above there is amazing 😍

There's a word for that... Pareidolia, the tendancy of the human mind to see faces. Our brians are primed for it

The leftmost one in row two most probably was made in a german train. I have the same stored somewhere on my phone... (In social media the appropriate hashtag for those pictures usually is #facesinplaces)

Yesterday I set up my garden workshop for (hopefully) the last time this year as all the important and necessary parts on the shed are done now.

Here's my little workshop. As it was lightly raining I set it up underneath the fold up roof. Lighting was also easier that way.

IMG_20221116_164018579.jpg

First item on yesterdays list were the side shelfs/storage compartments for the sleeping den. I ran two slats (rounded the top edge first) along the horizontal beam thus creating shallow storage compartments the will provide at least a little bit of storage up there for the kids to put away their stuff:

IMG_20221116_170846735.jpg

Then I adressed the issue of the gap between top beam and the roof cladding:

IMG_20221116_171003066.jpg

I cut several pallett slats lengthwise in a fitting angle. Like this I could screw them snug to beam and cladding on both sides of the beam. This created a new gap, that was covered with another wide pallett slat. This closes all the gaps off and creates a hidden channel that I can use to run cables through when I install the LED lighting system next spring or summer. But see for yourselfs:

The shed looks already nice and cosy when I light the gas lantern inside.

What's left to do in the next days and weeks is to get rid of unused wood that's not gone get burned in the fire pit, get all the powertools back home and all the lend out tools cleaned and back to their owner, I also will sell the unused corrugated roofing that's left and when all that is done I really need to thoroughly clean the shed...

The three items left on my to do list are:
  • composting toilet
  • LED lighting with 12V battery
  • solar power
But these things have time until next spring or summer. First I need to get the shed officially approved by the local building authority (we are in Germany you know, everything has to get it's stamp of approval...)

And then it's about time to get to build a muscle bike for my son....

Read this thread last night. What an epic build. You have done an amazing job of putting this together. So great that you did it with salvaged wood. Awesome!
