Hi everyone, I'm an avid cyclist and recent transplant to America, and I am getting deep into the weeds of American cycling history. My neighbor gave me the clapped out Schwinn above and I mildly rebuilt it and deeply enjoyed the process! Then I picked up a late 20s Elgin motorbike frameset.... And I began to understand how you all have so many bikes.

Have fairly straightforward plans for the Elgin, right now it's got most of the Schwinn's running gear. But I've had a long time dream of learning to braze so things might start to get out of hand.

Welcome you'll find a bunch of great ideas and help here , inspiration abundant!

Welcome. Sounds like you've definitely got the bike bug.
Between the cx touring bike, BMX, freeride hardtail, vintage MTB....

Killer bikes! I love that Elgin...Welcome :)
She's a beaut! And so many of the era look identical, it really is pure "this is a bike's bike" style

Thanks for the welcome! I have been finding some great inspiration here. I come from the mountain biking side of cycling, and the rapha-esque, gucci for guccis sake aesthetic so incredibly unrefined compared to the metalworked art I've seen on this and other vintage forums.

Welcome to the best rat rod bike building forum on the internets! We have a build off coming in just 10 DAYS! January 1 starts the ORBO (Off Road Build Off) and the SWBO (Skinny Wheel Build Off). That Schwinn would make a great Klunker re-do, I mean, you say you have MTB roots....perfect! Knobbies, '70s moto-x bars, Brooks saddle, add gears if you wish?!

Here's some inspiration for klunkers that have been done.

Again, welcome! RaT on~!

Welcome! That's a couple of cool klunkers you've got there. I'm looking forward to seeing your brazing project on the Elgin. The winter build off just started if you're ready to go on that one. You don't have to use a Brooks on a klunker. They do look cool and are comfortable but some of the cheaper leather saddles you can find on the web look great and are more budget friendly. Looking at photos of old klunkers I've seen many different styles of vintage saddles so use whatever works for you. I like Brooks for the comfort factor but I like old long spring saddles too and various others. Enjoy!
