In an instant. Bam. Big head knock right above ear. If not for the good helmet I'd be in a lot worse shape than the mild headache I have now. Otherwise fine.
I don't ride anything without one any more.

Bridges and boardwalks everywhere around here and they’re all the same. Slick as ice

Things get pretty slick as the weather changes. Wet wood is always unpredictable. Glad that tumble wasn't more serious! My last crash was pretty unexpected as well. I should have been wearing my lid, I gotta make it a habit

I always wear a lid. I cracked one and the outer shell came off. I missed a turn, went off the trail, dropped 5 meters straight down into a narrow stream bed and crashed face first into a rock wall on the other side. I was knocked out and after I woke up I couldn’t figure out how to untangle myself from the bike or how to climb out of the ditch. Dah. Another crash just resulted in helmet dents. I felt the MIPS system move. The helmet had a dent. I was knocked out and my jaw was dislocated. I had to drink food through a straw and then soft food for awhile. The next time I had my annual physical I told the doctor about injuring my jaw. He checked it out and said my jaw joint was “trash”, whatever that means. One of my friends is in a wheelchair chair from going over the bars on a paved bike path. He has a brain injury. He was wearing a helmet. He doesn’t remember the crash.

I’m a helmet proponent but admittedly still pop out without one occasionally. My wife keeps me in check

Had a buddy loop a wheelie in the parking lot after riding all day, fractured his skull, brain bleed, dead. Another has a permanent TBI from going OTB. No spinal cord damage but his brain injury caused him 75% paralysis on one side

I myself have had multiple diagnosed concussions (probably a few undiagnosed) and am not excited to see what that brings me as I age

I usually wear one...I was thankful I was on this ride...

It was a "confidence builder" ride, I was recovering from a spill at the skatepark that messed up my AC joint in my shoulder about a month prior.
Came flyin' down the trail, hit a jump that I needed to turn right after the landing...way over-shot the jump & turn & headed straight into a Cedar...

Needless to say it took a few more rides to get my confidence back! Thanks Protec!

heck ya, thank goodness for quality helmets. In June 2023 I crashed hard in the woods on my cyclocross bike, landed face first. I only know that because of my injuries and the front vents of the helmet being packed full of dirt. The MIPS system helmet had three cracks in the front. I had a severe concussion, three days memory loss, and no recollection of the crash. I only knew where I crashed because my GPS showed where I stopped riding and rode back home. Rode two miles back home and can't remember it! Bike was covered in blood. A week later I walked to that spot, and there were two new dirt jumps that local punks put in the middle of trail. I was probably looking at the river next to the trail and didn't see them.

I'm still healing from that crash. At 60 years old healing takes a lot longer.
